Robert Flournoy Makes History as Irvine Valley College Foundation’s Award of Excellence Recipient

Depression is the clinical term for a person who is going through an emotional and physical disorder characterized by a general loss of interest and chronic feelings of sadness. Although Robert Flournoy was going through this disease, it didn’t deter him from his yearning to help others in need.

26 years ago in Santa Ana, California, a city that’s known for gangs and drugs, Robert met a group of seven homeless people. Because his passion to help others was much greater than his depression, he felt their needs were more important than his own struggles. And so, Robert made it his mission to see that they were taken care of and that they knew they had a friend. At this moment, he had unknowingly begun his journey to fight hunger.

Since then, Robert has taken his compassionate ministry to Irvine Valley College, where he has worked for 30 years. With volunteers from his non-profit Loaves and Fishes x 10, in tandem with various campus departments such as the IVC Classified Senate, the Veterans Center, Campus Police, DSPS, EOPS, Facilities, and Student Services, Robert has helped alleviate hunger and improve students’ overall well-being.

As we are all aware, hunger can hinder students’ learning and academic success. Addressing student hunger is crucial for creating a positive and supportive learning environment. And so, in his many years on campus, Robert has partnered with the IVC Classified Senate to organize the annual Thanksgiving Turkey Drive and Basket Distribution.

Along with Circle K, IVC Athletics, College Corps, Facilities and Maintenance, and individual IVC employees, he has helped coordinate and glean fresh produce for on-campus food programs. He has also helped collect hundreds of canned goods for student veterans, and he played a crucial role in a toy drive that provided toys for IVC students and their families.

Black Couple Launches Online Marketplace Featuring Black-Owned Products and Services

Where some see barriers, Sterling Reed sees building blocks. A T-7 paraplegic since 1995, Sterling has turned his journey into a mission of purpose and empowerment. Alongside his wife Benita, the two have worked tirelessly to build BlackWallStreets.store, a new multi-vendor marketplace dedicated to uplifting businesses that are at least 51% Black-owned.

More than an e-commerce platform, Black Wall Streets is a tribute to the economic legacy of the 1921 Tulsa community; where Black entrepreneurship thrived. Today, the Reeds are rekindling that spirit with a platform rooted in ownership, opportunity, and community wealth. Vendors can register to list and sell their products for lower costs and commission fees than other e-commerce platforms.

“I may not walk, but I’ve learned to run digitally and spiritually,” says Sterling. “We built this platform our way; not just to sell products, but to change lives.”

One of his newest releases, “I Have Autism and I Still Shine,” centers the perspective of a child with autism—providing visibility and inclusion during Autism Awareness Month.

“It’s so important that kids see themselves in what they watch,” said Mr. J. “Whether they’re feeling anxious, angry, or just need to move, my songs give them a voice and a way to cope through fun, fitness, and self-expression.”

WIT Academy Scholarship Program Helps Promising Black Students Excel in Technology

Wade Institute of Technology (WIT), an experiential Silicon Valley-based college for students of African descent pursuing careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields, announced that it is accepting applications for the 2025 Wade Scholarship Program (WSP).

To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must be admitted to a master’s degree program ranked within the U.S. News & World Report Top 30 U.S. graduate schools of engineering and/or the graduate engineering program of any of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

“There has been an alarming drop in the number of Black STEM professionals, who were already woefully underrepresented in these fields,” said WIT Executive Director Booker T. Vision Films to Release Relationship Expert Aaron Jordan Jr.’s “Dating My Past” Movie in Time for Valentine’s Day

Vision Films (“Vision”) announces the North American Transactional VOD release of TV personality and relationship expert Aaron Jordan Jr.’s full-length feature Dating My Past on February 11, 2025. Based on Jordan’s successful book, The Power Within, A Woman’s Worth: From Both Sexes, the film is a contemporary Black love story that sheds light on the complexities and personal battles of dating in today’s world, emphasizing self-reflection, love, and the journey of self-discovery.
