What Does Healthy Mean to You?

What Healthy Really Means (and Doesn’t)
By Afi Okon, MPA, Solutions-Provider focused on wellness and community empowerment. Creator of Let’s Make Healthy, Our New Happy Campaign and Founder, American Obesity Foundation

So, let’s define it — what does "healthy" really mean? It’s not a number on the scale. It’s not a diet plan. And it’s sure not what you see on social media.

Healthy simply, means your family has the energy to live, love, and grow. It means your meals nourish more than your bodies — they bring you together. It means you move your bodies not to punish them, but to celebrate what they can do.

In this campaign, healthy means:

  • Feeding your family with love and intention

  • Finding joy in movement

  • Creating moments of calm, connection, and care

  • Building habits that support long-term well-being

  • Choosing a Culture of Healthy Living

Healthy doesn’t mean:

  • Being perfect or rigid

  • Cutting out entire food groups unless necessary

  • Comparing yourself to others

  • Sacrificing joy for the sake of control

Siblings Launch First Black-Owned Telehealth Service for Black Women, Closing the Gap Mainstream Healthare Has Ignored

Two sisters, Dr. Jacqueline Philips and Lorraine Phillips, have come together to launch Melanin Doctor, the first Black-owned telehealth service dedicated exclusively to Black women.

Built from both professional expertise and personal conviction, their mission is simple but urgent: to tackle the healthcare disparities within the Black community that mainstream medicine has long overlooked – starting with access to life-changing weight loss treatments.

The sisters’ passion for this work is also deeply personal. After watching their mother, who struggled with diabetes and weight gain, experience a remarkable transformation with GLP-1 medications, they saw firsthand the life-changing potential of treatments that too often remain out of reach for Black patients. That experience reinforced their determination to ensure more women in their community could access the same opportunities for better health.

63-Year-Old Retired USPS Worker Opens Black-Owned, Year-Round Storefront Snow Cone Shop

It’s never too late to dream again. At 63, Ms. Janet Marsh, a retired U.S. Postal Service supervisor, has transformed her retirement years into an inspiring second act as the proud owner of Snow Cone City — the only Black-owned, year-round storefront snow cone shop in Mesquite, Texas. She launched the company to honor her late husband’s lasting encouragement.

The idea was born on an ordinary drive through her city, when Ms. Marsh noticed something missing: no Black-owned snow cone businesses in Mesquite. She carried the idea home, where her late husband, Mr. Clarence, and their family quickly embraced the vision. Together, they launched their first small trailer, which eventually grew into today’s storefront — now a beloved community landmark open all year.

Three Black Siblings Create Heartfelt Children’s Book to Honor Late Grandfather and Celebrate Elders

Three African American siblings from Rockford, Illinois, – Antonia Royal-Whitmore, Darby Whitmore, and Royal Whitmore – were determined to keep his spirit alive when their grandfather, Morris Royal Sr., passed away earlier this year. Their new children’s book, Before You Go to Heaven, is a tender, beautifully illustrated tribute to their beloved grandfather — and to grandparents and elders everywhere who leave an unforgettable mark on our hearts.

Before You Go to Heaven follows the story of grandchildren cherishing moments with their grandparents, offering both a celebration of life and a gentle reminder to treasure time together. Written by the three siblings and inspired by true family memories, the book encourages children to honor the elders who shaped their lives, whether they are still with us or remembered fondly.
