BLACK WOMAN ENTREPRENEUR MAKES HISTORY WITH NEW LINE OF KOSHER, NON-GMO CAKE MIXES

Nationwide  Truly one-of-a-kind, King Preferred is the first Black woman-owned, Kosher certified OUD, Non-GMO, specialty food baking mix company. The business was founded in 2012 by LaTonya King as a way to express her love for cooking, which was passed down to her from her Aunt Sadie. Growing up, LaTonya would spend the weekends with her aunt, and on Sunday’s they would cook dinner together accompanied with a delicious, homemade dessert. Not one to let her Tennessee tradition fade away, LaTonya decided to utilize her aunt’s cake mixes and share them with the world. From there, King Preferred was born!

Building the company was not an easy feat, as LaTonya had to work tirelessly to carve out a niche in a baking industry that is dominated with the larger household name brands. Fortunately, her mixes are quickly making a name for themselves by way of trade shows, Tops Friendly Market in Buffalo, NY, Cubs Foods, national magazine ads, and good, old-fashioned word of mouth. Most recently, she showcased her mixes at the Kosher Fest in Secaucus, NJ with the crowds ranking their favorites as Bread Pudding, Banana Pudding Pound Cake, Cream Cheese Pound Cake, and Chocolate.

BLACK ENTREPRENEUR LAUNCHES D.I.Y. COURSE ON HOW TO WORK AT HOME MAKING HOME DECOR, GIFTS, AND CRAFTS

Nationwide  Chaketa Renee’, founder of Power2Manifest, has launched a DIY entrepreneurship course that offers women a way to work from home while learning a new way to use their creativity. It's called the Power2Manifest Cricut Class Bundle, and it teaches a simplified way to use a Circut vinyl cutting machine to create personalized shirts, cups, paper crafts, and home decorations. Typically a craft with a steep learning curve, the class bundle is made up of three classes for on-demand step-by-step direction on how to use the software Design Space. Do any crafty ladies out there want to be a woman in business?

Chaketa comments, “The software can be a bit tricky. But, with the right help, it’s doable. Once I perfected my craft, I wanted to teach other women how to use Design Space for Cricut so they can start their own home business like I did.”

Unlike the tiring YouTube videos and blogs that flood the marketplace, the Cricut Class Bundle cuts right to the chase, pardon the pun. Noted as a “jump-start on the Cricut learning curve," the crafting classes help students start selling crafts sooner. As a bonus, ongoing support is offered through a private Facebook community. It’s there that like-minded friendships are supported, and answers to questions abound in real-time.

NEW BOOK FROM AUTHOR CORI WILLIAMS SAYS “CODE-SWITCHING” IS A DEAL-BREAKER FOR A MORE SUPPORTIVE CORPORATE AMERICA

Nationwide  Today, globally, African Americans in the corporate world have an extra detail on their to-do list that risks self-esteem, personal productivity, and the inalienable right to thrive. Tasked daily with surviving racial bias and its resulting inequality, bright black men and women must watch what they say, who they say it to, and, most importantly, how they say it. It is called “code-switching," and no one is immune, not even President Barack Obama.

Putting a spotlight on what he calls discrimination by design, a new book by author Cori Williams looks at how African Americans get from one day to the next in corporate America. Released on September 7th, Thriving While Black: The Act of Surviving and Thriving in the Same Space could not be more on-point in a social climate that is strained at best.

So, what is code-switching, and why is it equal to racial trauma on ethnic groups? The term is defined as the switching from the linguistic system of one language to the dialect of another. Simply put, code-switching is a way of communicating that builds barriers between the races. Currently necessary in practice, it supports an inability to connect authentically, and that breeds micro-aggressions and stereotyping from all involved.

AWARD-WINNING FILMMAKER, PAMELA WOOLFORD, RELEASES FILM ON ANTI-BLACKNESS

Nationwide  End your September with a “powerful” movie. “Powerful” seems to be the word used by artists of note to describe Interrupted: Prologue to a Mem-noir, the upcoming 20-minute release by multi-award-winning, avant-garde filmmaker Pamela Woolford, premiering on Vimeo On Demand Friday, September 26, 2020 at midnight EDT and to be discussed in the online film-premiere event Art as a Response to Anti-Blackness Monday, September 28, 2020 at 6 p.m. EDT.

The Monday event will also be broadcast live on WPFW 89.3 FM (wpfwfm.org) and is cosponsored by Busboys and Poets and the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution at George Mason University as part of the A.C.T.O.R. series (A Continuing Talk On Race). Interrupted: Prologue to a Mem-noir is a memoir short, a term Pamela Woolford coins, relating to the history of anti-Blackness in America.

Legendary jazz performer Bob James, who has been vocal about and pledged a percentage of his last concert to Black Lives Matter, calls the film a “brave and powerful (and necessary) work of art.”

BLACK SPEAKERS TO NETWORK AND LEARN HOW TO PROFIT IN THE INDUSTRY TOGETHER

Nationwide  Brian J. Olds, president and founder of Black Speakers Network, is the cover of the September Speakers Magazine. He is on a mission to equip, connect, and inspire the next generation of Black professional speakers. But it wasn't something he saw coming.

“In 2006, I stood up in a small classroom to deliver my first presentation in Toastmasters; I was afraid. My sweaty palms trembled as I clenched my notes like a security blanket. I didn’t want to speak, but I knew I had to because instinctively I recognized that everything I wanted in life was waiting for me… just outside of my comfort zone. It was there that I discovered not only my passion for speaking but also my desire to create platforms to assist current and aspiring professional speakers in reaching the audience they were called to serve,” said Olds.

NEW SEASON OF ‘BURIED TRUTHS’ PODCAST INVESTIGATES AND EXPLORES THE AHMAUD ARBERY CASE

Nationwide For months after three white men chased Ahmaud Arbery to his death, Georgia of 2020 looked disconcertingly like Georgia of 1950. In the third season of the Peabody Award-winning podcast, Buried Truths, host Hank Klibanoff investigates exactly what happened when Ahmaud Arbery took his final jog along the residential streets of Brunswick, GA, when neighbors decided to trap him, when a prosecutor declared that no arrest should be made, and when community members demanded, and kept demanding, justice.

Across the seven episodes, all available for download beginning Wednesday, September 16th on your favorite podcast player and at wabe.org/shows/buried-truths/, Klibanoff applies the same lens through which he's investigated and analyzed other cases of racial injustice from the modern civil rights era. Klibanoff and his undergraduate students at Emory University in Atlanta have spent the summer reviewing the evidence, researching the history, connecting with those who knew Ahmaud Arbery, and others who grew up in the racial climate that produced the men charged with the shooting death of Arbery -- Greg McMichael, Travis McMichael and William "Roddie" Bryan. It’s not about who-done-it, it’s about understanding the historical context -- the why.

8-YEAR OLD YOUTUBER LAUNCHES BUSINESS SELLING CORONAVIRUS KITS

Nationwide  Coronavirus is molding the next generation of entrepreneurs, proving that age is not necessarily a measure of success. Just ask 8-year old Bryson Best, a third-grader and kid YouTuber, who literally turned lemons into lemonade by transforming an idea into a thriving business despite COVID-19.

In 2019, Bryson launched his YouTube Channel, The Kid Knows Sports, where he provides sports content and commentary from a kid’s point of view. Although the channel was experiencing consistent growth, professional sports came to a screeching halt this past March due to COVID-19, making it challenging for him to provide the entertaining sports coverage his subscribers had grown accustomed to.

As a result, Bryson quickly learned the power of the pivot and started looking for ways to keep his family and friends safe from Coronavirus. In June, he decided to expand his brand by selling The Kid Knows Sports "Coronavirus Kits." These kits include a 2-ounce hand sanitizer and an anti-microbial, washable facemask with The Kid Knows Sports logo.
