How Pastor Rev. Burton Barr Jr. Overcame Drug Addiction With Faith
In his new book and documentary, 121: Overcoming Drug Addiction by Faith, Rev. Burton Barr Jr. traces the steps of how he climbed from rock bottom to full recovery. The film can be streamed and the book can be purchased at 121-Movie.com
At the age of 20, Barr was held down by a group of friends while they injected heroin into his veins, which started his 22-year drug addiction. At the height of his addiction and during his darkest hour, his father came to him.
He didn't start preaching at Barr, telling him that he needed to quit. He didn't talk about the hurt and the pain that Barr was causing his family.
He didn't even tell Barr about the damage that he was doing to himself. He just opened the Bible to a certain scripture, gave it to Barr, and told him to read that scripture every morning before he left home. The scripture was Psalms 121.
Black Attorney Removes N-Word From Dictionary
Attorney Roy Miller from Mason, Georgia has devoted his life to justice, racial equality, and music. He has succeeded in all three roles. In fact, through his efforts, he has even succeeded in having the infamous n-word slur against Black people stricken from a major dictionary published by Funk & Wagnalls. His young niece was the impetus for his fight against the company.
He comments, “Around Christmas of 1993, my sister purchased the new edition of Funk & Wagnalls Standard Desk Dictionary for my 13-year old niece at a grocery store in Macon, Georgia. I visited my niece on March 6, 1994, and she appeared sad and depressed. My niece told me she no longer wanted the books."
“Knowing how excited she was when she first got them, I was puzzled at the change in her attitude and asked why. She told me and I immediately understood,” he recalls.
Funk & Wagnalls has published a collection of English language dictionaries known for emphasis on ease of use and current usage. But consider the dictionary’s definition of the n-word: "nigger n. A negro or member of any dark-skinned people; a vulgar and offensive term (See Negro).”

Mom and Son Launch 'Black Heroes' Coloring Book Series
Quinn Cummings and her 7-year old son, Aidyn, have together launched a new Black hero coloring book series via their publishing company Aidyn's Books LLC.
At a time where families have had the opportunity to be together more in the last two years, routines and structure have saved many households from chaos. There's nothing quite like a great storytime that presents a perfect moment to connect with your child. With such a broad selection of different plots and categories to choose from, the initial reaction is to pick a book that looks enjoyable. Books are the entryway into introducing your child to the world. Although they can certainly be used as a relaxing bedtime regimen, children's books can present a profound message that can stick with your child forever.
When Quinn and her son Aidyn began the beautiful tradition of reading together, she began to notice a pattern with the type of books she read her son. As a mother, her priority was not only to make reading enjoyable but make a difference for her son in how he absorbed information and received a vital message. Being able to read a book through her son's eyes sparked a drive to create tools and resources for her son in order to offer him a reading experience that will elevate him to his fullest reading potential.
