SCHOLAR DR. GLADYS B. WEST WHO PLAYED A ROLE IN DEVELOPING THE GPS RELEASES MEMOIR ABOUT HER LIFE

Nationwide -- The long awaited memoir of Dr. Gladys B. West, a Black woman who helped integrate what is now the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, Virginia, and played an integral role in the development of the Global Positioning System (GPS), was released on Juneteenth and is available on Amazon. "It Began with A Dream," written by Dr. West and M. H. Jackson, is the story of West’s life.

Born in rural, segregated Dinwiddie County, Virginia, in the midst of the Great Depression, she pursued her dream of leaving the tobacco fields and becoming the first in her family to attend college. She was hired by the Navy in 1956, serving as a mathematician and an expert in the field of satellite geodesy and global positioning.

Today she is known as a “hidden figure” by many, and her contributions to the creation of the GPS impacts almost everyone throughout the world. Dr. West takes us on her incredible life journey in this heartwarming and unforgettable memoir, which may also serve as a benchmark and source of inspiration for other women and girls who have similar aspirations.

OVER $400M PROJECTED TO BE SPENT DURING SHOP BLACK WEEK 2020 WITH BLACK-OWNED BUSINESSES

Nationwide -- As Black Friday approaches, early projections indicate that over $400 million will be spent during Shop Black Week (SBW) 2020. The high-profile events of 2020 greatly highlighted the existing disparities and injustices within the Black community.

Hashtags and postings dominated many people's social media platforms in support of Black lives. Because of the numerous protests, videos and news reports, many high-profile celebrities, athletes, and influencers indicated that they felt a tremendous personal responsibility and are now focused on what they can personally do to help. With this heightened awareness, a campaign like SBW is slated to be well-received and well-supported by everyone.

This year SBW has over 200 participating organizations that represent over 1.5 million members, subscribers, and followers who will share and hashtag #shopblackweek to encourage all Americans to participate. "We simply ask that every American make at least one purchase from a Black-owned business from November 20-27th as well as throughout the holiday season," says Aysha Jackson, SBW's Campaign Coordinator.

With the success of the previous year's campaign, early interest from supporters, copycat initiatives, and the SBW website's daily organic traffic, all of this predicts that millions will be participating. For those visiting the SBW website, there will be tens of thousands of visitors daily looking for quality Black-owned businesses alone. "Because of this early interest, we need additional businesses to sign up on the site to take advantage of this traffic," says Carla Tillman, Ph.D., SBW's National Director.

LOCATING BLACK-OWNED BUSINESSES IS MADE EASY WITH THE LAUNCH OF A NEW ONLINE DIRECTORY

Baltimore, MD -- On November 1, 2020, a mobile responsive website designed to help consumers find Black owned businesses officially launched and is now available to the public. AlwaysBuyBlack.com has a directory of more than 3,000 Black owned businesses currently listed on its website.

Businesses listed on the directory at the launch are predominately based in Maryland, Virginia, California, Georgia, Texas, Michigan, Washington, D.C. and the Chicagoland area of Illinois. Moreover, information about establishments located all over the country are being added each week. This enables consumers to support Black owned businesses not just in their neighborhoods, but also while traveling for business or leisure.

Currently there are over 80 different categories of product and service-based businesses including, food and drink (restaurants), fashion apparel and accessories, and many professional services. This is only the beginning for this comprehensive resource. The vision is to provide access and visibility to all Black-owned businesses (both physical location and online based), thereby creating economic stability for business owners, their families, and their communities.

“Our directory gives consumers a Black owned option for any product or service they might need,” explained Meredith Hurston, owner and founder of AlwaysBuyBlack.com. “One of the biggest problems I hear about the call to support Black-owned businesses is the public doesn’t know where they are. We have a solution for that.”
