Eric Adams Bows Out of NYC Mayoral Race
Is this another Chapter in
the Ghosting of Black Political Power?

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has announced he will not seek re-election, marking a dramatic turn in the city’s political landscape. While Adams cited fundraising difficulties, relentless media speculation, and the fallout from a now-dismissed federal corruption case, many observers see this moment as part of a larger, troubling pattern: the erosion of Black political power in America’s highest offices.

There seems to be a pattern emerging that could be construed as a playbook. Black political leaders of prominence — from Marilyn Mosby in Baltimore to Attorney General Letitia James in New York, from Fani Willis in Atlanta to economist Lisa Cook on the Federal Reserve — have all faced legal, political, or media challenges that severely undercut their ability to lead. These challenges, often amplified by mainstream legacy outlets, echo an earlier era when Mayor David Dinkins, New York’s first Black mayor, was relentlessly attacked in the press, shaping negative public perception that ultimately derailed his career.

Critics argue that while Black leaders are aggressively pursued over questionable or relatively minor allegations — from property purchases to personal relationships — others, including our President with more than 35 legal judgments, continue to thrive politically. The disparity raises urgent questions about double standards in both media coverage and legal scrutiny.

In Adams’ case, despite the dismissal of federal charges, the stigma lingered. Combined with hostile coverage from outlets such as the New York Post and Fox News, the public narrative shifted decisively against him. The result was political isolation, dwindling donor support, and, ultimately, his withdrawal from the race.

Broadway Across America and Black Theatre Coalition Announce 5th Annual Regional Apprenticeship

Nationwide -- Broadway Across America (BAA) and Black Theatre Coalition (BTC) announce the launch of applications for their fifth annual regional apprenticeship program. This nationwide, educational paid apprenticeship takes place over 14 weeks from January-April 2026, offering college students and early career professionals across North America the opportunity to receive first-hand experience with the inner workings of the commercial theater business and Broadway touring.

Black Author Creates Fun Toy Marching Band For Kids Inspired by Her Children’s Book

 It’s a kid’s marching band (with real toy instruments) started by Stephanie Singleton, the author of The Adventures of Ryan & Riley and Mr. Teddy Bear, and the organizer of The Adventures of Ryan & Riley Children’s Marching Band, for kids ages 5 to 10 years.

Since the release of her book in 2014, available on Amazon, Singleton has transformed the narrative into a vibrant mentoring platform and nonprofit organization.

Is Christianity a Force of
Mental Slavery to Black Christians?

Resources on Black Progressive and Revolutionary Christianity

Increasingly, some in the Black community are leaving the Church and Christianity altogether, calling it the “white man’s religion” or a tool of mental slavery. While it’s true that certain interpretations of Christianity have encouraged passivity and compliance with oppressive systems, it’s equally true that other expressions of the faith have been profoundly liberating—fueling revolutions, inspiring resistance, and sustaining movements for justice.

Christianity as a Tool of Liberation

History bears witness to the fact that countless Black leaders rooted their fight for freedom in Christian faith. Harriet Tubman relied on her deep spirituality to guide enslaved Africans to freedom along the Underground Railroad.

Nat Turner led one of the most significant slave rebellions in U.S. history inspired by biblical visions. Marcus Garvey invoked spiritual language to rally a global Pan-African movement.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. preached nonviolent resistance from the pulpit. The Deacons of Defense used their faith as a shield for civil rights workers against white supremacist terror. And long before them, Richard Allen founded the African Methodist Episcopal Church to empower Black Christians spiritually and politically.

Their faith was not a force of submission—it was a force of defiance, vision, and liberation. Without their insights and sacrifices, many of the freedoms we now take for granted, including the ability to openly debate religion and justice on social media, would not exist.

Reading the Bible for Themselves

Dr. Gayraud Wilmore, in his book Black Religion and Black Radicalism, shows that once enslaved Africans gained wider access to literacy and could read the Bible for themselves, rebellions and insurrections increased. Instead of pacifying them, scripture often emboldened them. They drew inspiration from the prophetic voices of Moses, Micah, and Amos—who all called for freedom from oppression and justice for the marginalized.
