Why Now

This webinar takes place during a pivotal moment in the national conversation on justice reform, as the U.S. President has called for an end to cashless bail. Members of the media and public will hear from BALT leaders who have been on the frontlines of issues such as bail reform, rapid response legal support, and long-term community advocacy.

BALT also faces an uncertain future: without additional funding or donations, the organization is at risk of closing its doors in May 2026. This critical juncture underscores the importance of spotlighting BALT’s work and galvanizing public support for community-led justice initiatives.
During the webinar, both members of the press and the public will be invited to participate in a live Q&A session, with the opportunity to ask questions on screen or via chat.

Event Overview

CEA will host its first Client Spotlight Webinar featuring BALT, a community-rooted nonprofit that has redefined how the law can be used as a tool for justice. The one-hour virtual session introduces the concept of movement lawyering, highlighting how BALT challenges traditional legal frameworks by centering community-led justice and anti-racist practices.

Lead Presenter: Iman Freeman, Executive Director of BALT Participants will:

• Understand movement lawyering and how it differs from conventional legal service models.

• Learn from BALT’s story and strategies as a case study in applying legal support at the local, state, and federal levels.

• Identify practical, community-informed ways to engage in advocacy or legal work, especially when addressing harm caused by legal systems.

Iman Freeman, Executive Director, BALT, comments, “This webinar is an opportunity to uplift the truth that justice may not be a legal solution, it is about people. We want to share how a movement lawyering approach challenges traditional frameworks and why centering community-led justice is critical at this moment.”

Shawnta Jackson, Founder & Chief Executive Associate, CEA, comments, “Movement lawyering challenges us to think differently about how justice is achieved. It is not only the work of courts, but of communities, and it requires engagement from philanthropy to business, from education to nonprofit leadership. This webinar is a space to reflect on how all of us can stay present in the fight for equity.”
