BLACK-OWNED PUBLISHING COMPANY, HBCU PREP SCHOOL, IS ON A MISSION TO EDUCATE CHILDREN OF COLOR

Nationwide O.W. Gurley, Dora Wells, and Solomon Sir Jones aren’t household names. But Claudia Walker, founder and CEO of an award-winning publishing company based in Oakland, California, called HBCU Prep School aims to change that. In her new book, The ABCs of Black Wall Street, she takes children on a nostalgic trip through the heart of the historic Greenwood neighborhood in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

The first children’s book of its kind, it transports readers back to the early 1900s to visit iconic establishments like Osborne Monroe's Roller Skating Rink, Mt. Zion Baptist Church, and Williams Dreamland Theater and Candy Store. As they read and journey along Greenwood Avenue, children get to “meet” O.W. Gurley, a real estate mogul, Dora Wells, a fashion designer, and Solomon Sir Jones, a filmmaker — just to name a few.

HBCU GRAD LAUNCHES BLACK WOMEN IN CLINICAL RESEARCH ORGANIZATION WITH 6,800 MEMBERS, AIMS TO RESHAPE THE INDUSTRY

Danielle Mitchell, is an HBCU graduate and also the founder of Black Women in Clinical Research, which aims to educate, empower, support, and help Black women thrive in the industry. Launched in 2019, she is also the founder of two other affiliate organizations called Black Men in Clinical Research and Minorities in Clinical Research. All of her organizations are becoming a growing force for outreach, mentorship, and diversity across the country.

Mitchell, who earned a Bachelor of Science with a focus in Biology/Biological Sciences from Clark Atlanta University, has 15 years of experience in science and 5 years of clinical research experience.

BLACK-OWNED FUNERAL HOME PARTNERS WITH GENEALOGIST TO PRESERVE BLACK HISTORY BY MEANS OF FUNERAL PROGRAMS

Dr. Valarie Richardson, Earl Richardson, Jr., and Alex Richardson, the owners of Richard Funeral Home are working with Dr. Antoinette Harrell, a respected historian and genealogist, to help preserve Black history by means of their collection of funeral programs and obituaries. Based in Amite, Louisiana, the funeral home contacted Dr. Antoinette Harrell regarding their collection of funeral programs and Harrell provided her genealogical and historical preservation expertise.

Later, the decision was made to donate the collection for preservation, and Dr. Harrell picked up the collection of funeral programs from Eddie Brazil, a staff member.

NATURAL HAIR STYLIST HONORS HER LATE MOM WITH PRODUCT LINE THAT HELPS WOMEN WITH DRY HAIR AND SCALP ISSUES

Nationwide  Meet Kenyatta Nicole, a specialist in natural hair care and styling, who has launched Nora's Haircare Collection, a unique product line designed to help women who struggle with various issues from dry scalp, split ends, dry hair, and even hair growth. She is also known and respected as an avid educator who shares valuable tips with her salon clients about at-home hair maintenance and aftercare.

As a child, Kenyatta always showed a passion for the beauty industry. She went on to earn a Master Cosmetology degree from Empire Beauty School in Kennesaw, Georgia, and decided to name her product line after her late mother, Nora, who herself was also an entrepreneur but sadly died in 2010. During the pandemic, she was inspired to launch the company as a supplementary idea to the salon that she already owns in the Atlanta area.

African American Small Business Foundation launches in New York

The African American Small Business Foundation launches in NY to provide services to small business owners in New York with a focus on Downstate, New York. Phil Andrews is the President of New York State’s largest African American Chamber of Commerce, Inc. and is the Founding President of the African American Small Business Foundation. The African American Small Business Foundation, Inc. is a 501 c 3 Not-for-Profit organization.

He is a Past President of a local chapter of 100 Black Men of America, Inc. having served two terms as President. Phil was also the New York District Office of the United States Small Business Administration

2019 Small Business Champion for 14 Counties in Downstate New York. In 2019 the New York District Office of the United States Small Business Administration named Phil Andrews as its 2019 Small Business Champion for 14 counties in Downstate, New York.

He has been named to City and State Magazine Top 100 Power List on numerous occasions.

MAKING THE HOOD GOOD BY CHECKMATING CRIME AND VIOLENCE

STONE MOUNTAIN, GA – A series of news headlines have blasted across metro-Atlanta over the past few weeks, offering a disturbing pattern involving teens in metro Atlanta: 

“16-year-old boy killed, 2 other teens shot near Atlanta fair”

“Teen arrested on murder charges after police say he shot 9-year-old to death” 

 “5 shot, 1 stabbed, teen killed in separate violent incidents in Atlanta overnight” 

“5 teens arrested after shooting, armed carjacking, police chase through metro Atlanta  

 “16-year-old charged after car dealership security guard is shot and killed” 

Orrin Hudson, founder and executive director of the nonprofit, Be Someone, said such senseless violence shatters not only victims' lives but also those of the perpetrators and their families. The community, Hudson said, must collectively stand up and stop the violence by doing more to reach out to youths. 

On April 3, 3 to 6 p.m., Hudson is hosting a free life skills workshop aimed at helping youths to make positive decisions at school, at home and in the community. The leadership workshop, which will be held at Hudson’s Be Someone Stone Mountain training facility, takes place on National Good Deeds Day and is dedicated to the memory of those whose lives have been impacted by the recent teen violence in metro Atlanta, Hudson said.

Obesity's Detrimental Lifestyle in America 2022 is Worse than Covid-19. Many More Lives are Drastically Affected Today. "The Cold Hard Facts About Obesity in America."

Beth Perry reports that being overweight or obese could very well influence the development of Scleroderma: systemic sclerosis (SS), a connective tissue disease generated by fibrosis (enlargement and scarring) of connective tissue of the skin in humans. This group of scattered diseases (SS) is quite problematic; especially for the skin, blood vessels, and internal organs (lungs, kidneys, and the digestive track).  MUSC is a top-ranked biomedical institution.

The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) biotechnology and molecular research team works hard every day to understand the smallest properties of living cells in order to discover better ways of treating various diseases.  The solving of difficult medical problems at the molecular level will greatly improve health, wellness, and longevity. Beth, a biotechnical and molecular researcher, is a member of Dorchester County, South Carolina's Flood Singleton family, "6 generations, 7 family members," who worked for the Westvaco/MeadWestvaco Corporation in various phases of paper production (West Virginia and South Carolina). Family members were as follows: brother, Keith Marcus Singleton (1972-2010), a computer science, University of South Carolina graduate: Intern, GIS Field, West Virginia. Her brother, *Alex Albert Singleton, a three-time hall of famer; father, Clement Albert Singleton, Jr. (1941-2019), granduncle, Malachi Perry, worked 37 years (1957 and retired 1994), granduncle, Thaddeus "Son" “Cat Man” Flood, Sr. (1917–1956), and great-grandfather, James "Jim" Singleton (1884-1954). 

And yes, Clementine "Beth" Singleton worked as a research lab technician at Westvaco Forest Lab (2001-2002) and ArborGen Reforestation in 2002-2003.  Beth also worked in Biotechnology and Molecular Research, Westvaco Corporation and MUSC (2004-2009; 2011-2014), and now in 2022.

DR. CYNTHIA J. HICKMAN, ALUMNUS WALDEN UNIVERSITY’S 66TH KEYNOTE COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER

Dr. Cynthia J. Hickman, an author, educator, caregiver advocate, and recent speaker on the Leadership Experience Tour with Shawn Fair, delivered Walden University’s 66th Commencement address on January 29, 2022. The celebration was an online event honoring Walden’s graduates and their milestone achievements.

Dr. Hickman is a two-time graduate of Walden University and has been an active alum and ambassador since graduating. As a social change agent, life-long learner, and daughter of a middle-school educator, giving back and sharing the importance of using her education for good was the highlight of her speech. She encouraged the graduates to “get into good trouble,” a quote by the late Representative John Lewis.

Pushing past the status quo requires one to “behold the turtle,” a concept of slow and steady as change eventually happens. Hickman stressed that sticking your head out is uncomfortable but necessary for change.

The significance of “a societal passion should fuel efforts to impact the community. Hickman shared her mother’s anthem, helpful and powerful words to live by: “She told my three sisters and me to help out when you can, in all the places you can, and in all the times you can, demonstrating the art of using ones’ education for good.”

Ina Johnson Myers, a speaker and certified life coach who is also the author of Girl, Don't Play!!! Pray!!!! She is a 24-year retired Combat Veteran with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and a survivor of MST (Military Sexual Trauma).
