COVID is not the only disease we have to worry about when we travel. While COVID has changed how we travel and shed light on how easily disease can spread throughout the population, there are a number of medical concerns that travelers should be aware of while jet-setting to their favorite destinations.

In this newest release by global traveling physician Dr. Yvette McQueen, Travel 911: A Health Guide for Adventurers, she offers the solution to safe travel for those that are ready to dust off their suitcases safely.

Dr. Rosalind Tompkins Founder Of
"Mothers In Crisis" Helps To Relieve Stress And Inspire Hope In Challenging Times

Rosalind Tompkins, President and Founder of the nonprofit organization, Mothers In Crisis, Inc., has launched the 10,000 Balls for Hope Campaign and Essay Contest because too many people are experiencing record levels of stress in these uncertain times due to the coronavirus pandemic and the underlying stressors associated with navigating a new normal. Although hope is on the horizon because of the COVID-19 vaccinations, stress-related habits such as jaw clenching, grinding of teeth, and biting fingernails are increasing.

In addition, studies reveal that many health problems that are related to stress are affecting Blacks at alarming rates such as hypertension, obesity, heart disease, diabetes, depression, and gastrointestinal problems.

The good news is that help is here through the 10,000 Balls for Hope Campaign. Volunteers of Mothers In Crisis launched the campaign by giving stress balls to essential workers and others in need of hope. Along with the stress balls participants are encouraged to take “hope breaks,” says Tompkins.

ENTREPRENEUR MAKES HISTORY AS THE SEO QUEEN, ONE OF FEW BLACK WOMEN DOMINATING THE INDUSTRY

Zhe L. Scott, founder and CEO of The SEO Queen, is an entrepreneur who is very passionate about her work as a web developer and search engine optimization expert. AWARD WINNING ATTORNEY ZULU ALI REPRESENTS BLACK MOTORIST IN HIS COMPLAINT AGAINST DEPUTY WHO KICKED HIM IN THE HEAD AFTER SURRENDERING

Willie Jones, a motorist who was kicked in the head after surrendering to a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy is pursing a complaint against Deputy Sheriff Corie Smith and San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department for police misconduct, civil rights violations, and injuries sustained as a result of the assault, says his attorney, Zulu Ali of the Law Offices of Zulu Ali & Associates, LLP in Riverside, California.

On June 16, 2021 in Victorville, California, Willie Jones, a Black motorist was surrendering after an allegedly driving at high speed and later complying with orders of San Bernardino County Deputies by laying prone on his stomach when Deputy Corie Smith kicks Mr. Jones in his head twice while another deputy placed his knee on Mr. Jones’s neck.  The incident was captured on a surveillance camera at a dealership in Victorville, California.

Dr. Mautra Staley Jones, Wins National Mother of the Year Award

Known as one of Oklahoma’s youngest thought leaders, Dr. Mautra Staley Jones has been named the 2021 National Mother of the Year®. She was awarded this honor by American Mothers, Inc. on May 1 during their 86th National Convention held virtually this year.American Mothers, Inc. (AMI) is an 86-year old non-profit organization whose mission is to recognize mothers and their positive impact in communities through the annual Mother of the Year® award.

Jones is a mother of three and serves as the Vice President for Institutional Advancement and External Affairs at Langston University and the Executive Director for the Langston University Foundation. “I hope that being named Mother of the Year, if nothing else, serves as encouragement for other moms out there as well as people who are just going through trials and tribulations. I am a walking example that demographics don’t define your destiny,” said Jones.

She says that the honor of being recognized as the 86th National Mother of the Year is a fulfillment of a dream. “I knew that once I became a mother I wanted to just give everything I could to my children and make sure that their lives were full, and have more happy times than sad ones.”

AUTHOR, PLAYWRIGHT AND PHILANTHROPIST JAY CAMERON GRANTED DUAL CITIZENSHIP IN SIERRA LEONE

Jay Cameron, author, playwright, and philanthropist, has been granted Sierra Leonean dual citizenship after tracing his ancestry to the Temne tribe. Bridging the gap between the African diaspora and Africa has become Jay’s main goal since 2018.

Now, in 2021 he’s celebrating his new Sierra Leonean dual citizenship with more projects that will encourage people of African descent to discover this continent on their own terms.

The Journey to Citizenship

After a heritage trip to Ghana in 2018, Jay realized most of what he’d been taught about Africa wasn’t true. Years of schooling and living as an African American in the US did not adequately educate him about the real Africa, the many cultures, and its people. He set on a journey to change that narrative for himself and others, and his newly regained citizenship is only the next step.

HOMELESS BLACK GRAPHIC DESIGNER RELEASES LINE OF NOTEBOOKS TO HELP COMBAT MENTAL ILLNESS

Carrie Bledsoe, a homeless graphic designer, has launched the newest line of Black-owned notebooks to help deal with her personal mental health problems. Running around in circles with a lack of income and poor money management led to her downfall.

At first, she didn't believe in jotting down her feelings. Now, however, she can finally pour her heart out into her notebooks until she is able to afford therapy.

FIRST NATIONAL TELETHON FOR BLACK MATERNAL HEALTH TO CAPTURE BLACK BIRTH EXPERIENCES — CELEBRITIES, INFLUENCERS TO ANSWER PHONES ON JUNE 25TH

On Friday, June 25th, influencers, celebrities, and advocates will answer calls to 800-450-IRTH from noon to 8pm for the first national telethon to capture Black birthing and pediatric experiences of care. Expecting and new parents of color who have given birth in the past two years are invited to call 855-450-IRTH and leave a review of their Ob/Gyn, birthing hospital or pediatrician appointments as part of a nationwide effort to create public accountability in the medical system for Black maternal and infant care.

Actress Angela Lewis of Snowfall on FX, award-winning civil rights attorney and talk show host Areva Martin Esq., Charles Johnson of 4Kira4Moms, celebrity doula and founder of MamaGlow, Latham Thomas, and health and wellness guru, Coach Gessie, are among the over 30 celebrity and influencer guests donating time to take calls for the cause.

8-YEAR OLD CEO LAUNCHES “MY FRIEND” PLUSH LINE, EMPOWERS BROWN BOYS THROUGH REPRESENTATION AND POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS

Recently, featured on the Kelly Clarkson Show, Lil Dee is an eight-year-old CEO who does not let his age get in the way of spreading positivity and building the confidence of brown boys in Ohio and beyond. Inspired to make a difference and drive positive social change, he created his own company, Our Brown Boy Joy, to inspire and empower brown boys across the country and let them know just how special they are. Lil Dee and his team are excited to announce the launch of the “My Friend” plush line, plush dolls designed to be both a tool and toy that helps brown boys see themselves positively.

According to Lil Dee, “Brown boys should know they are wonderful, just the way they are!” The My Friend plush dolls were designed with this in mind, and each plush doll speaks several positive affirmations, including: “Brown boy, you are joy.” Through playing with and interacting with these dolls, brown boys will not only see themselves represented but also hear special affirmations geared toward them, reminding them how special and extraordinary they are.

The My Friend plush doll wears a hoodie for an important reason. After learning about Trayvon Martin’s killing, Lil Dee knew his plush dolls needed to wear a hoodie to signify that clothes should never be used to justify bias or be viewed as threatening. He never wants brown boys to be perceived negatively because of their skin color or the clothes they wear, another reason why the My Friend plush doll is dressed in a hoodie, a pair of jeans, and Timberland inspired boots.
