Clinicians of Color is a community of mental health professionals whose mission is to connect BIPOC mental health communities to services. Clinicians of Color was founded by Lisa Savage, LCSW, and Kim L. Knight five years ago. These two mental health professionals met on Facebook and immediately clicked. They realized that Black and Brown therapists were doing amazing things but often overlooked. So, Lisa and Kim decided to create a platform to elevate Black and Brown therapists and provide them with support, training, and a welcoming community.
Since its inception, Clinicians of Color has increased to a community of 20k members. They believe strongly in the power of community and engage in ongoing activities to cultivate the community. After the killing of George Floyd, it became amply evident that the Black communities needed mental health services but accessing them was challenging. Many in these communities were unaware of the resources and sought to connect with therapists who represented their race and understood their cultural nuances. Clinicians of Color heard the call and decided to create a mental health directory to help connect communities to therapists who look like them. Their objective was to make it easier for Black and Brown people to find a therapist. The directory has therapists representing almost every state with various specialties. To learn more about the directory, visit CliniciansofColor.org
North Carolina-based writer Gary V. Brill is very pleased to announce the release of the second volume of his critically acclaimed historical fiction series JOURNEY: The Story of an American Family.
This chapter in the struggle begins in 1814 as James Woodman, a freeborn young Black man, fights in the District Militia to repel the invading British who aim to burn the Capitol. Even though he personally risked all to save our Founding Documents, he knew the promises they made were not always kept to people who looked like him.
After the British defeat, he decides it’s time to start a family, so he buys the freedom of Abigail from her “master”, Francis Scott Key, a neighbor who also served in the District Militia. He and Abigail, with the help of Luke, a young runaway James had secretly moved to the farm his father bought after his service in the Revolution, begin to build a home and a life together.
I Always Wanted To Be Somebody, the autobiography of tennis legend Althea Gibson, has been re-released by New Chapter Press.
Originally published in 1960, the book had fallen out of circulation and was only available for exorbitant prices by book resellers. However, New Chapter Press, a leading publisher of tennis books, worked with the Althea Gibson family, estate, and the newly formed Althea Gibson Community Tennis Association to republish the book and make it available for the masses at a reasonable $19.95 price ($9.95 via Amazon Kindle).
A portion of sales for the book will benefit the Althea Gibson Community Tennis Association.
I Always Wanted To Be Somebody is the intimate and candid story of a girl who grew up in the asphalt environs of Harlem, skipping school, drinking hard liquor, stealing, and fist-fighting, but went on to break the color barrier in tennis and achieve the pinnacle of the sport by winning Wimbledon and the U.S. Championships and becoming an inspiration for many future champions.
