Infection at the incision site and opening of the incision exposing the tissue (dehiscence) are complications that can occur.

It's important to:

  • Perform hand hygiene often.

Chronic wounds aren't just a patient issue, wounds affect families and communities. The act of opening up ones home for visiting health workers, can be a daunting task, especially considering that you open up your home and often have to expose parts of oneself that is private and sacred. As professionals, we must never lose site of the vulnerability our patients face in receiving wound care.

A recent Turkish study found (not surprisingly) that Caregiver burden is high, when caring for a loved one with a wound. Increased Caregiver burden has a negative effect on patients and families.

Wounds have a staggering effect on the people that suffer from them—but also on their families, communities, and clinicians, because of the marked effect on each patient’s mental health, self-esteem and overall quality of life. (HealthyIO 2021)

As health professionals, lets focus on compassionate care for our patients and extend that compassion to the caregiver.
