Thirteen Notable African American Seniors And Elders Who Died Recently, African American History Month Special Edition: Celebration of Life

By HBCU ECSU Gheechee Gummee Author, Dr. Charles L. Singleton

Black History, African American History Month, established by Carter G. Woodson (historian, author, and writer) on February 7, 1926, ninety-six years ago. In a few written words, I will share with you 13 African Americans whose lives were impactful 360 days of every year, who lived on this earth.

I wish I had time to tell you about all who have passed away during this time of a worldwide pandemic called Covid-19, An Airborne Illness Possibility, Aerodynamically Fashioned "With Persistent Mutative" Transmittable Omnipresence (AAIPADFWPMTOP). This highly mutative contagious sickening and deadly illness is traveling at Earth's speed of 67, 000 miles per hour, or 1.6 million miles a day around the sun, or 19 miles a minute, some 86, 400 seconds per day: 0.0041666 degrees per second (Quora, DuckDuckGo, Space. Com).

Every day the Earth Spins, and Covid-19 also travels at 1000 miles an hour, or 460 meters per second on its axis, about 5 U.S.A. football fields (Scientific America). Becoming The Voice and Vision of the New World 2020, "A New Normal, Abnormal for Some Time to Come." --- Photographer and Visionary, Sally Jacobs Harmon. Once again, Earth’s orbital speed and Covid-19 does too, allows completion of its journey in 23 hours, 56 minutes, 4.09053 seconds, approximately every 24 hours around the sun, while spinning on its axis 1000 miles per hour, or 1600 kilometers per hour, almost 460 meters per second (Scientific America).  Therefore, I will only have time to mention a few lines about these brave warriors of rightfulness, who have gone on before, in quotes, songs, books, music, media coverage, military and government leadership, legacies and achievements. For those of you who are living today, lets read and read more. These earthly legendary seniors and elders are as follows:

Mel Reeves (1958 - 2022 circa), January 6, 2022, an outstanding and amazing Minneapolis civil rights warrior and journalist, who over his lifetime, fought for social justice. Sadly, and regrettably Reeves died from COVID-19 complications.

In remembrance of Mel Reeves, William Cullen Bryant's Thanatopsis read, "So live, that when thy summons comes to join the innumerable caravan, which moves to that mysterious realm, where each shall take His chamber in the silent halls of death, Thou go not, like the quarry-slave at night, Scourged to his dungeon, but, sustained and soothed by an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave, Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him, and lies down to pleasant dreams."

William Ernest Henley's Invictus: "Out of the night that covers me, Black as the Pit from pole to pole. I thank whatever gods may be for my unconquerable soul.  In the fell clutch of circumstance, I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeoning of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed. Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the Horror of the shade, and yet the menace of the years Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.  It matters not how strait the gate, how charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul."
