How DEI Saves Black Lives

Diverse Medical Research Helps
Blacks Get Better Health Outcomes

Left: Divergent CRO Co-Founder Shawn Williams | Right Publisher Kamau Austin

Diversity and DEI have recently come under fire from both sides of the political spectrum. But in this episode of The Black News Scoop, we explore how diversity in medical research is not just a talking point—it’s a matter of life and death for Black communities and people of color.

It’s been widely reported across news outlets and social media that health outcomes for Black people and other communities of color consistently lag behind those of mainstream society—even when income and access are equal.

One major reason? Black and Brown people are significantly underrepresented in clinical trials and other medical research.

That’s where Divergent CRO comes in. This innovative, Black-owned company is working to close that gap by making medical research more diverse, equitable, and inclusive.

In this exclusive interview, we speak with Ms. Shawn Williams, founder of Divergent CRO, about her mission to change the face of clinical research and improve health outcomes for underrepresented communities. The company is currently welcoming inquiries and open to collaboration opportunities with biotech and medical device companies that are serious about inclusive research.

Kamau's Question: Can you tell me a little about your background? Like where you grew up and went to school?

Shawn William's Answer: I went to Oakland Technical High School In Oakland, CA, and I was part of a program called Health academy that's where I was introduced to Science as a career.

Kamau's Question: Who or what inspired you to go into the CRO Industry?

Shawn William's Answer: Seriously, I kind of landed into the field, starting from being accepted to a Medical career summer internship at Howard University (I will talk about the experience) which lead me to a ticket back to Oakland, Ca---Got a job in the medical records in Emeryville at the time the company was called Chiron Corporation ( I will talk about the experience that lead me into Clinical research).

Kamau's Question: What motivated you to take the leap of faith to start your CRO business with your partners?

Shawn William's Answer: Being in the industry for over 25 years both myself and partner discussed the lack of leadership in the clinical field and maybe 5-7% of BIPOC communities participate in clinical research and less of us working in the industry.

Kamau's Question: What makes your business unique to other businesses in the CRO field and why is DEI so important?

Shawn William's Answer: BIPOC communities are not being represented fairly due to lack of awareness in the community and being to have authenitic conversations in a safe space.

Kamau: Can you tell us about some of your goals and plans for the future of your Divergent CRO?

Shawn William's Answer: I discuss this during the video interview.

Kamau's Question:  With the attacks on DEI in the present political environment will this adversely impact diversity in clinical trials and also possibly the viability of your company Divergent CRO?

Shawn William's Answer: Political challenges may create short-term uncertainty, but regulatory requirements, scientific necessity, and market forces will sustain DEI as a cornerstone of clinical research. By embedding DEI into its operational DNA, Divergent CRO can turn external pressures into opportunities for leadership and growth.

Shawn William's Answer: I will discuss this during the video interview.

Kamau: What is the best way to contact you?

Shawn William's Answer: LinkedIn Divergent CRO and our website address is divergentcro.com | See More On Divergent CRO on The Scoop
