Meet the Formerly Incarcerated Woman Who Became the Lady Who Bought the Bank

Despite Latunya Wright having been incarcerated for more than four years in federal prison for her part in a multi-million dollar heist at an ATM servicing company, her journey to becoming "The Lady Who Bought the Bank" is nothing short of remarkable. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, she faced significant challenges early in life. At just five years old, she lost her father, a retired military man and business owner, under tragic circumstances.

The trauma didn’t stop there; at nine, she endured abuse from a family member, and by fourteen, she was diagnosed with epilepsy. These adversities could have easily derailed her life, but Latunya had a resilience that would become the cornerstone of her success. Today, she stands as the proud owner of Wright Financial Bank, a symbol of her triumph over adversity.

By the age of fourteen, Latunya was already displaying an entrepreneurial spirit. She lied about her age to secure a job at McDonald's, working after school to support herself.

The following year, she was offered a summer program with the Urban League, where she excelled and was given an office desk, an uncommon opportunity for someone her age. Her quick learning and determination caught the attention of her superiors, setting the stage for her future endeavors.

However, her path was not without obstacles. At a young age, Latunya found herself on the wrong side of the law, making decisions that would haunt her for years. Eventually, these choices led to her incarceration—a pivotal moment in her life that would change her forever.

At eighteen, after serving her time, Latunya’s passion for numbers led her to Forest Park Community College, where she pursued studies in Business and Accounting. This was when she discovered her talent for taxes.

Self-taught, she began by preparing tax returns for herself, her family, and her friends. Her skill was undeniable, and soon, word spread, bringing in a steady stream of referrals.

Her tax business flourished so much that she had to train others to help manage the workload. With her newfound income, Latunya ventured into the world of car auctions, becoming the only young Black woman bidding against established white business owners. Her confidence and persistence earned her respect and recognition, but it also attracted attention from authorities who scrutinized her rapid rise in business.

Known as both the “Tax Lady” and the “Car Lady,” Latunya’s business acumen continued to grow. She expanded her car-selling business, offering payment plans and even purchasing a tow truck to manage her investments. But Latunya’s ambitions didn’t stop there.

She saw an opportunity in real estate and quickly immersed herself in that industry as well. However, her previous run-ins with the law and her time in prison created additional challenges. She faced legal battles that tested her resolve and threatened to undo everything she had built. Despite these setbacks, Latunya remained steadfast, using her experiences as motivation to push forward and rebuild her life and business from the ground up.

Latunya’s success didn’t come easily, but her story is a testament to the power of perseverance. She believes that to find success, one must be willing to follow their heart, ignore naysayers, and never give up.

Her journey from a young girl who overcame unimaginable obstacles, including incarceration, to a successful businesswoman is nothing short of inspirational. The legal challenges she faced became lessons that helped her navigate the complex world of finance and business with greater caution and wisdom.

Today, Latunya is not just a financial expert; she’s an icon in her community. Known as "The Lady Who Bought the Bank," she has transformed her life and business into a beacon of hope for others.

Her story serves as a reminder that no matter where you start, with determination, hard work, and a clear vision, you can achieve greatness—even if you stumble along the way. Her ability to rise above her past, turn her challenges into opportunities, and even emerge from incarceration with renewed purpose, is what makes her truly extraordinary.
