HELPING THE HOMELESS

COMMUNITY IN CALIFORNIA

Cameron Davis is a 17-year-old high school senior from Los Angeles, California. She is an honor student at Brentwood School and has committed her time to helping the unhoused community in the city.

“I’ve been volunteering to help feed the unhoused community since I was very young,” Cameron tells us. “When I was 9 years old, I was crowned Little Miss California and I chose poverty alleviation as my community service platform. Los Angeles has one of the largest homeless populations in the United States and it is impossible to ignore this humanitarian crisis.”

Cameron first started volunteering with My Friends Place serving food on Skid Row. Throughout the years as well as during the pandemic she has also created meals and hygiene kits for the Hollywood Food Coalition and Midnight Mission. All her many hours of dedication and volunteer work have earned her the Gold President’s Volunteer Service Award.

Calvin T. Mann, President and Founder of Encourage Me I’m Young (EMIY) Inc., a Detroit-based non-profit organization has launched both a mobile mentoring bus and an apparel line to inspire Black youth.

EMIY is all about supporting Black and brown boys, girls, and their families against the negative forces they deal with every day.

“Negative influences have been normalized today, like violent video games and toxic social media–and it’s causing higher suicide rates, more bullying, heightened racism, more violence, and substance abuse,” Mann said. “We’ve created a new line of family-friendly apparel that schools and families can use to create positivity in our communities and help us continue the important work of encouraging others.”

The EMIY mobile mentoring bus (as seen on Fox 2 Detroit) is used to reach young Black youth who are in crisis because of not having a positive figure in their lives. The concept is to pull up at sporting events and community activities and provide immediate encouragement to the young children who are there.

AUTISM STUDY LAUNCHES NEW VIDEO CAMPAIGN TO ATTRACT MORE AFRICAN AMERICANS

SPARK, the largest study of autism families across the United States, hopes a new video campaign helps the research initiative capture the attention of more Black and African American individuals and families. SPARK contends that autism research is more powerful when children and families from varying racial and ethnic groups are fully represented.

Since launching nationally in April 2016, SPARK has enrolled more than 120,000 individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) – 80% autistic children and 20% autistic adults. So far, more than 15,000 African American and Black autistic individuals and families – roughly 12.5% – participate in SPARK.

“We have a good number of African Americans and Black autistic individuals and families involved in SPARK, but we really want to capture as many people as possible to get that richness and diversity we need to fully have the chance to uncover the secrets to a condition that has implications for a lot of other people,” says Dr. Wendy Chung, Director of Clinical Research at the Simons Foundation Autism Research Initiative and principal investigator of the SPARK study. “We hope that hearing some of the personal stories of our participants will inspire others to join our efforts so we can move toward equal representation and provide everyone with an equal chance to have a happy, healthy, and productive life.”

2023 DETROIT DOLL SHOW TO PROVIDE EMPOWERMENT AND FUN WITH THE HELP OF AMERICAN GIRL AS A CORPORATE SPONSOR

Sandy’s Land LLC is an entertainment service where the mission is to “Party with a Purpose” to provide amusement and empowerment. Its 2023 Detroit Doll Show will include new and returning vendors and a power-packed program to delight every child as well as the inner child of an adult.

Attendees will experience a variety of vendors that include authors, artists, selfie stations, Christmas Diorama, and black dolls. The event has moved to the Marygrove Conservancy to provide free parking, food trucks and comfort in the heart of the west side community on Saturday, November 18, 2023 from 11am to 6pm. The first one hundred people will receive a swag bag.

Dr. JoAnn Watson and character developer of Melody Ellison American Girl Doll; legacy award presentation to honor Tawana Petty Founder of Petty Propolis; Rev. The Bobbi Kristina Serenity House Fourth Annual Celebrity Golf Tournament: A Resounding Success in the Fight Against Domestic Violence

The picturesque Oaks Club at Valencia was the setting for an inspiring day of golf, entertainment, and community engagement during the fourth annual Bobbi Kristina Serenity House Celebrity Golf Tournament.

Hosted by the renowned singer and entertainer, Bobby Brown, and his wife, entrepreneur extraordinaire Alicia Etheredge-Brown, the event took place on October 9, 2023, at 26550 Heritage View Lane, Valencia, California.

Celebrities and notables from the entertainment industry, including Johnny Gill of New Edition, actors Anthony Anderson, Flex Alexander, Dondre' Whitfield, Judge Greg Mathis, comedian Alex Thomas, and former world boxing champion Zab Judah, joined in support of this vital cause, bringing their star power to the tournament. 

Founded in 2015 by Bobby Brown, the Bobbi Kristina Serenity House is a non-profit Domestic Violence Safe Haven born from a father's love for his daughter, a victim of domestic violence.

Together, Bobby Brown and Alicia Etheredge-Brown expressed their deep commitment to ending domestic violence, with Bobby stating, 'We are one step closer to a world free from domestic violence,' and Alicia emphasizing, 'Together, we can create a safer, more loving world for everyone.'

PROFESSOR PUBLISHES A BOOK REFUTING THE U.S. SUPREME COURT ON AFFIRMATIVE ACTION

In his recently published book, The Myth of Affirmative Action, published by Ethics International Press, Dr. Rudolph Alexander, Jr says White society has long scapegoated Blacks for social conditions.

As one example, researchers found a strong correlation between the price of cotton and the number of lynchings of Black people. Dr. Alexander comments, “Now, Whites feel if they do not get into college or get a job, it is because Blacks receive affirmative action and racial preference over more qualified Whites in education and employment.”

Dr. Alexander asserted this myth is vastly false in his recent book, now available in paperback on Amazon. For instance, in the academic arena, the University of Wisconsin admitted one year 27 Black students with ACT scores between 16-19, which many Whites would consider low and an example of affirmative action. However, the same year, the University of Wisconsin admitted 429 White students with scores between 16-19. Also, the University of Wisconsin admitted five White students with scores below 15 and admitted one White student with a score of 13. These types of numbers involving Whites typically are not disclosed.

DOCUMENTARY REVEALS STORY ABOUT BLACK AUTOMOTIVE EXECUTIVE MAKING HISTORY EXPORTING ELECTRIC VEHICLES TO CUBA

In April 2023, filmmakers Peter and Pamela McNeil began producing a documentary called Driving Towards Change that tells the story of John Felder, the African American CEO of US-based Premier Automotive Export LTD, a company that has made history with an agreement to export USA-manufactured electric vehicles, scooters, and bi-directional charge stations to Cuba.

This breakthrough agreement, which is the first of its kind since the embargo imposed by the United States on Cuba in 1961, will allow Mr. Felder, a disabled, Vietnam-era US Air Force veteran to help bring a carbon-zero footprint to a nation the size of Florida and an emerging automobile market of 11.5 million people.

PROMINENT LAWYER ZULU ALI RELEASES BOOK ABOUT THE ECONOMIC EXPLOITATION OF AFRICAN AMERICANS BY THE JUSTICE SYSTEM

Attorney Zulu Ali has released a book of his lecture entitled Negroes for Sale: The Business of American Criminal Justice. The lecture, now available in print, analyzes the history of economic exploitation of African-Americans by the American Justice System, from inception to the present. The book is now available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other book outlets.

A former police officer and U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Attorney Ali earned a juris doctorate in law (J.D.) from Trinity International University; a masters in administration of justice (M.S.) and business (M.B.A.) from University of Phoenix; a degree with a focus on African studies from Regents College through a consortium with Tennessee State University; and is a doctoral scholar researching pan-African business and trade at California Southern University.

In 2007, inspired by the legacy of civil rights attorneys Charles Hamilton Houston, Thurgood Marshall, and Avon Williams, Jr., who used the law and courts as a vehicle to make change and protect all people against injustice, Attorney Zulu Ali opened the Law Offices of Zulu Ali & Associates, LLP with a focus on representing persons accused of crimes, immigrants, and persons seeking civil justice in state and federal courts. Ali is on the list of counsel at the African Court of Justice and Human Rights in Tanzania (Africa) and the International Criminal Court at The Hague (Netherlands).
