Author, entrepreneur, and podcaster Marvin Banks was inspired to write Mythbusters because he was all too familiar with the negative connotations and misperceptions held about Black fathers in America and reinforced by media stories. However, that wasn’t the reality for him nor most of the Black fathers he knew.
“Having been a father for more than 15 years raising my own children, I saw men who were taking an active role in parenting, developing and caring for their children in a way that contradicts the narrative that is so often portrayed,” Banks said. “I was literally in the trenches with these men who were present and doing the work on a day-to-day basis to raise, happy, healthy and well-rounded children, but whom you never hear about on the news, or in the office. I decided to write this book to correct the misinformation that exists about Black fathers so that people will know the truth: that Black men really are present in the lives of their children.”

In fact, government data from the U.S. Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) verifies that the majority of black children actually live with their children, contradicting the often-repeated myth that 70 percent of black children are fatherless. Furthermore, whether they live with their children or not, Black fathers are the most involved of all primary recorded race and ethnic groups, according to CDC’s data.
Mythbusters: Lessons from Active Black Fathers profiles five fathers with their own unique approaches to rearing children but similar in their commitment and presence in the day-to-day development of their children.
“I know all of these men personally. They are men that not only stood tall to raise their own children, but who also served as father figures to those in need”, Banks detailed. “These are all men who no matter how busy their own lives were, showed up for their kids and made that a priority from little league basketball and football games through high school. I got to see them encourage and support their kids providing consolation after a tough loss and encouragement for the next challenge whether athletic or academic each time. But you don’t hear much about that and it’s time that changed. With this book I hope to correct some of that false information and show that Black men really are engaged and involved in the lives of their children and what a positive impact that has on children as they mature into adults.”
“In a year that has brought so many tough challenges and losses for families throughout America, but particularly Black families who have suffered the loss of loved ones, including sons, brothers and fathers, it’s encouraging to see that someone is correcting a false narrative about Black men that is beyond harmful, but malicious,” said James Williams.
Mythbusters will encourage men by showing not just the bond that men can build with their children but with each other as they work to shape the next generation. I encourage every Black father, or father figure to get this book.”
