BLACK NURSE TURNED ENTREPRENEUR LAUNCHES ID BADGES FOR ESSENTIAL HEALTHCARE WORKERS OF COLOR

Nationwide --  Reflections By Zana is launching a unique line of workplace accessories for underrepresented front line health care professionals required to work during the global COVID-19 pandemic. Creator Aneesha Smith, a nurse with 19 years of experience, says the badges are necessary because hospital workers are repeatedly questioned by patients to clarify their titles, and are often mistaken with one another - even more now during a face-covering pandemic.

“We are one of the few disciplines that have to work during this crisis,” Smith says. “We don’t have a choice when it comes to working from home, but these badges do provide the opportunity for us to choose how we’re being represented, seen and acknowledged on the job.”

Her distinctive ID badge reels include hand-painted wooden, enamel, and PVC badges featuring images and titles of Black professionals.

BLACK-OWNED MOBILE APP BRINGS FINANCIAL ADVISORS TO LOW & MIDDLE INCOME FAMILIES

Nationwide -- Meet Ronda Reid-Mohammed, the founder and CEO of Filance, a new app that connects certified financial service sector professionals directly with low and middle-income individuals and families. The platform allows users to receive financial advisory services from their mobile device.

Ronda says she created the app to bolster financial stability among everyday people. With an emphasis on affordability, she feels the app will open doors for those who might have perceived financial advisors as out of reach, either due to cost or lack of access.

“Cost should not be a barrier for seeking financial advice. Everyone, no matter their income, should be able to work with a professional who can help them make a plan for their finances,” she said. “Many people are already burdened with embarrassment when admitting they need financial advice, so it was significantly important to me to remove the cost barrier and provide a personalized and discreet service.”

The program, developed over a year ago to prevent elevated racism in workplaces and communities, trains professionals on how to untangle their connections to bias, navigate socially complex workspaces, and actively pursue positive change.

FROM TRAUMA TO TRIUMPH: HOW KATHIANA DULCINE USED A TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCE TO CREATE AN EDUCATIONAL PLATFORM FOR THE BLACK COMMUNITY

Nationwide “Knowing what must be done, does away with fear.” That’s the motivating mantra that was used by Rhode Island resident, Kathiana Dulcine, to create the new Coco Community membership program.

The Coco Community Membership Program provides a safe space for the Black community to discuss, express and learn about taboo topics on intimacy and relationships. The subject of intimacy has long been a taboo subject in the Black community owing to the tumultuous effects of slavery including the dehumanization and exploitation of the bodies of the ancestors for pleasure. However, being uncomfortable about matters of sensuality has consequences. It can impact the quality of relationships and prevent individuals from seeking resources to deal with mental health and healthcare concerns.

AFRICAN AMERICAN BREAST CANCER SURVIVOR TELLS INSPIRING STORY IN NEW BOOK

Nationwide -- Linda Washington, singer and songwriter of Missing You ft Lamar and a breast cancer survivor, has released a Kindle version book entitled Forbidden And Broken Finding Love Behind The Scars on Amazon. The book covers her heart touching and inspiring journey from her pre-treatment life of hopes and happiness to post-treatment life of rejection and empty sympathetic looks. Linda is now living in Phoenix as a nurse, but now through her book, she wants to spread hope and tell the world how she came back stronger and ever successful.

The $9 Kindle version book is not just a collection of someone’s experience as a patient but it also portrays a picture of 3.5 million women with a history of breast cancer in the U.S. Given the little awareness and the pattern of society’s reaction based on concepts relating to breast cancer, the drastic change in Linda’s life is probably the unfortunate and inevitable fate of the one million women being diagnosed with breast cancer every year around the globe. The antidote to this menace is the protagonist that lies within, and of course, Linda horsed that.

PARTNERSHIP SEEKS TO CREATE MORE LENDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR BLACK-OWNED BUSINESSES
Ellis Carr, president and CEO of Capital Impact Partners, and Kurt Chilcott, president and CEO of CDC Small Business Finance

Nationwide -- CDC Small Business Finance, the nation's leading mission-based small business lender, and Capital Impact Partners, a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) that champions social and economic justice nationally, are proud to announce a new alliance. With a focus on economic empowerment and equitable wealth creation, the two organizations have the unique ability to deliver a full suite of lending products and programs that support community efforts to create strong, vibrant, and healthy places of opportunity.

Realizing the need for a new approach to implement scalable solutions that address the widening racial wealth gap, CDC Small Business Finance and Capital Impact have been in conversation for more than a year and, last fall, began to work diligently together to create the foundation for this new enterprise effort. Today the need is greater than ever as generations of systemic inequality are magnified by the disproportionate impacts of COVID-19 on Black and Latinx communities, as well as the issues raised through the racial justice groundswell.
