Presidential leadership - however - horrible has happened before, like now, and will, again; even the cicadas on a 17 year timeline showed up - on schedule - this year. But it is systemic racism, planetary catastrophe, social unrest and protest, and a host of other maladies that represent an ‘old normal’ concession of repugnant prejudices, privileges, and antipathy - also showing up. Covert racism to overt trumphism is an algorithm with a programatic initiative - pathological narcissism.
Lastly there is major contraindication - outlier or not - to the now mandated and currently distributed COVID-19 vaccination where a ‘herd immunity’ could be anticipated. Herd immunity also known as ‘population immunity’, is a concept used for vaccination, in which a population can be protected from a certain virus if a threshold of vaccination is reached. It begs the question how viable is herd community in a climate of overt racism. I surmise it's more about the herd than the community itself.

Is the "PRESCRIPTION" really The NEW NORMAL? By JV Howard
Now that we have a President -Elect forthcoming on January 20th to lead us out of this consummate political and leadership morass let's take a well deserved deep sigh and consider our expectations going forward. It would be consistent to be optimistic if you believe the proverbial glass of life is half full but in reality it seems - during the last four years at least - the pitcher of ‘hearts’ has been empathy empty.
When we think of “contraindication” it is normally associated with a prescription of medication that has a serious purpose with warnings and include in the description what NOT to take with it - like alcohol or some other drug. By definition contraindicate means to give indication against the advisability of a particular or usual remedy or treatment. I'm applying the same principle of contraindications between drugs to normal and “new normal.”
The phrase “New Normal” is one we hear often and it is supposedly a remedy, treatment, or antidote for the ‘old normal’ which we can never return and falls under the category of old school. The ‘old normal’ represent life before George Floyd, COVID-19, Trump, lockdowns and before the untimely death of 300k plus Americans.
Much of the old normal appear to be part of a scheduled script. Let me explain; just as fall turned into winter, the sun sets and the moon rises, on schedule, so do the likes of a centennial COVID-19 virus that is supposed to happen once a century.

There has been a coerced rush to nurture a “new normal” but the metamorphosis has been incremental. Normative values like social distancing, N95 masks, PPE, self quarantine, Zoom, home school, telework, and food delivery have permeated not only our dialogue but also our social graces out of necessity. Why the necessity?
We are entering vaccines purgatory - who gets it first, unknown efficacy, delivery logistics, side effects, profound mistrust and an alarming daily infection and death rate that mandates behavioral acclimatization. Comply with the prescription or die in ignorance of the contraindication. The prescription from the experts is to social distance, wear a mask, and limit public exposure but if you insist on close contact, eschew wearing a mask, dining out, and engage in public jeopardy then you are executing contradictory behavior to survive a centennial pandemic.
When we question the last fours years one can claim asylum or rationalization in the scheduled and unscheduled script of every 100 years. For example; it is the function of every major infrastructure development - like a hydropower dam or gas pipeline - to incorporate a 100 year disaster plan to prepare for the one variable we can't control - when?
But we don't like to be reminded of such inevitably, rather we prefer to think of “our lifetime” as the only chronology that matters. 2020 is like 1616, 1717, 1818, and 1919, because the first two digits match the second two digits. This happens only once in a century. Yet, being alive in 2020 is unique because this is the only year you and I are likely to live through the first two digits that will match the second two digits. Again it's our lifetime that matters. Concerned...you should be. We are on a schedule too!
Speak of scheduling: this week, Dr. Fauci participated in a conversation with the Black Coalition Against COVID, a group made up of Black doctors, leaders, academics and religious figures, urging the community to take the vaccine seriously and get it when it’s available. Dr. Fauci cited statistics from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention that show that Black people are almost three times more likely to die from the coronavirus once they’re infected.
“I, myself, will be perfectly comfortable with taking the vaccine and I will recommend it for my family,” said Fauci. Of course he would he’s white.
Ironically Dr. Fauci praises African American scientist at ‘forefront’ of creating Covid vaccine Dr Kizzmekia Corbett one of two leaders of the team that created the vaccine as only 14% of Black Americans trust vaccine will be safe. A recent survey on race and health by The Undefeated and the Kaiser Family Foundation found that almost half of the Black people surveyed said they won’t take it (22% “probably not” and 27% “definitely not”).
When asked for reasons as to why they wouldn’t get the vaccine, 39% of white people said they don’t want it or need it and Black people cited safety concerns (39%) and lack of trust (35%). With a history of medical mistreatment and the Tuskegee Experiment in the recent past, some would suggest that Black people are justified in their distrust of the vaccine. The 40-year Tuskegee Study was a major violation and has been cited as "arguably the most infamous biomedical research study in U.S. history."
The National Black Nurses Association will launch two campaigns on Dec. 15 under their “wellness initiative” NBNA Resilient Nurse Resource called “RETHINK.” The initiative’s goal is to create awareness around vaccinations focusing specifically on influenza and pneumococcal (the name for any infection caused by bacteria that can cause a range of infections including ear and sinus infections and pneumonia.)
Another goal of NBNA’s initiative, which can be found at nbarethink.com, is to debunk myths about vaccines and talk up its benefits. It will also include a support line, free counseling for nurses and text therapy sessions.
“We know how difficult this year has been for nurses everywhere, especially Black nurses who are faced with both the pandemic and the current racial uprising,” stated NBNA President Dr. Martha A. Dawson. “It is crucial that we protect our nurses’ physical and mental wellbeing during such an unprecedented time in our country.
With RE:SET we are able to provide them with the tools necessary to recover from the daily stresses of exhausting working conditions and challenges. It is essentially PPE for their mental and emotional health, which will help to impact their physical health.”
Meanwhile, a group of Black doctors want to assure the people that they’ll be taken seriously and taken care of by hospitals. The coalition consists of Black doctors from the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, the National Black Nurses Association, Howard University, Meharry Medical College, the National Medical Association, the Morehouse School of Medicine and the Cobb Institute.
You should not have to be an outlier (a person or thing differing from all other members of a particular group or set ) to survive the schedule or unscheduled script of events every 100 years or the uniqueness of 2020 but it is paramount to adhere to the prescription to keep a safe distance, wear a mask, and self quarantine. To contraindicate what's now normal - by default - could impact the schedule... yup your schedule.

So in the year 2121 - a century from now another pandemic could be in play, another group of pitiful leaders could be out of play, the electorate will not tank, the Sun will rise, the moon will light the night, fall will precede summer, black lives will matter, all on schedule. Does your prescription work for you or are you contraindicated? Remember you don't have to be an outlier!
