Exclusive Interview with Kamau Austin and Dr. Dona Cooper
Dr. Dona Cooper is an insightful and brilliant bridge joining two fields of health essentials to Black people. She brings together medical procedures and natural holistic remedies often thought of as diametrically opposed to each other.
Dr. Cooper blends both fields. I believe health is definitely a form of wealth.
Health expenses can defund our wealth. Moreover, medications can have side effects.

Kamau's Question: Who or what inspired you to take the leap of faith and go into the medical profession?
Dr Dona's Answer: I was inspired to go into healthcare from a very young age. The people who impacted this decision are my grandmother who was a midwife and local community nurse. I wanted to serve others just like her.
My mother also played a pivotal role in my decision also. At a young age my mother related to me that when she was pregnant with me my father told her that if she had a boy child that he would like for that child to be a medical doctor.
So even though their first child, me, wasn't a boy, I wanted to carry out my father’s desire. I was determined to become a medical doctor to help relieve pain and suffering.

Kamau's Question: What made you, unlike other medical doctors, pivot to wellness and healthy foods as part of your healing solutions?
Dr Dona's Answer: In 2010 I decided to shift to a 100% plant-based lifestyle. This positively impacted my health.
I lost 25 lbs, my blood pressure improved and I felt great. At about the same time the RGV where I live and practice medicine became the fastest metropolis in the US.
I then realized that I needed to share my lifestyle therapeutics with my patients. So I began to study more and then integrated lifestyle medicine into my practice. My 12 weeks-to-wellness program has had a profound impact on the lives of many of my patients, who have either reduced medications or reversed their chronic diseases.
