Acclaimed Exonerated Artist Nelson Long Looks To Illustrate His Life Forward

Many people in New York and nationwide have heard of the Central Park AKA The Exonerated 5 and Kalief Browder.  The Exonerated 5 were 5 Black and Brown teenagers and young men who were wrongly convicted and were exonerated years later because of a confession of the real Central Park rapist, and other evidence.  Kalief Browder, was put on the infamous Riker's Island, due to lack of bail money, suffered cruel punishment, and although he received $3.3 million settlement from the New York government later system took his own life.

However, few people know about Nelson Long.  Long was wrongfully convicted of a murder for 37 years in NYC, only to be exonerated, during the COVID-19 epidemic, when the real killer gave a death bed confession.

Nelson recounts how he endured unspeakable horrors, neglect, and abuse in prison many times - fighting for his life.  Despite the horrific conditions in prison Nelson Long, enrolled and graduated from college courses, legally advocated for himself, and made money developing and selling his artwork behind bars.

He emerged from prison having to navigate a world of homeless shelters on one side and advanced digital computer, internet, and smart phone technology on the other.  Long emphasizes "y'all have been using this technology all this time but all this is new to me."

Nevertheless, Nelson, has been able to start Facebook Groups and use apps on his phone.  He is a rising symbol of survival and overcoming injustice.  You can see a sample of his artwork below...

Obviously a man loses a lot of his life in 37-years.  Long's wife and mother have passed away.  He didn't get a chance to spend time with his friends, family, and children in the time he was incarcerated.

Financially Nelson a very promising high school student, before his incarceration, has to make due with his developing artwork business and scarce social services available to him.  He is looking for some financial compensation from the government for his wrongful conviction like the Exonerated 5 which collectively got a settlement of $41 million.

His financial situation is complicated by the fact his name was slightly changed by the prison system.  He was recorded as Nelson Longg rather than Nelson Long.  This has caused problems with him getting services because of his mistaken identity.  Take a look at his ID on getting released below...

Our publications will be following the restoration of Nelson Long by our government agencies and society.  Today he is 62-years of age and deals with physical problems related to his inhuman treatment in 13 different places of incarceration.

Long even reveals he had a near death experience while in prison during the outset of Covid-19.  He described he saw beings, in what seems like some type of altered state of conscious.  One presumed by me to be an angel, spoke to another angelic type being asking "if he was asleep" - the other being said in Long's near death experience "his heart is still open."

Long was then revived in a resuscitation after that vision.  Let's as a society "keep our heart open," to Nelson Long, and others imprisoned like him.
