This July 4th, Independence Day we truly have to remember now more than ever: Freedom Ain't Free? Given these foreboding political times we have to see thru the lens of the call to defend our purported democracy.

This is against the backdrop on the recent Supreme Court decision that lower Federal Courts can't make decisions setting precedent or doing nation wide injunctions on court cases.

On this 4th of July, Brotha Rev. Corbett, is both a Pastor and Civil Rights Attorney, has some very sobering insights on our country's purported Democracy. Founders Launch Newest Black-Owned Book Publishing Company, Aim to Help 1,000 Aspiring Authors This Year

Veteran entrepreneurs and authors Dante Lee and Kellie B. Brooks have teamed up to launch BlackAuthors.com, which aims to help more than 1,000 aspiring African American authors start and finish their books by the end of 2025. Their full-service publishing company offers writing, ghostwriting, editing, book cover design, printing, and even marketing services.

In recent years, there’s been a notable increase in the number of African American authors contributing to the literary world. As of 2022, approximately 13.49% of children’s and young adult books were penned by Black authors, marking a significant rise from 9.04% in 2021. This upward trend reflects a broader movement where Black writers are increasingly sharing their narratives, experiences, and imaginations across various genres.

“Crossing Lines: Why America's Immigration Debate Is About More Than a Border"

Let’s cut through the noise. America is in the thick of a storm over immigration, and everyone’s got an opinion—but not everyone has the facts. If you’ve ever asked yourself, “How the heck did we get here?”

You’re not alone. Here’s a real, no-fluff breakdown of what’s happening, why it’s still happening, and what the law actually says.

❗ Yes, Illegal Entry Is a Crime

Let’s start with the obvious: crossing the U.S. border without authorization is a federal crime. First-time? It’s a misdemeanor. If someone is caught and returns again? That’s a felony. That’s not opinion—it’s statute, straight from 8 U.S. Code §1325 and §1326.

No matter where you stand politically, it’s illegal. But that’s not where the debate ends… it’s where it begins.

🧑‍⚖️ Civil vs. Criminal—What’s the Real Difference?

Just because something’s illegal doesn’t mean it’s always criminally prosecuted.

Immigration law in the U.S. is a weird hybrid:

• Overstaying a visa = civil violation.
• Crossing the border unlawfully = criminal offense, but not everyone is prosecuted in criminal court.

Why? Because the system is buried in backlog, and the federal government doesn’t have the resources to prosecute every single case. So, a lot of immigration violations get handled like traffic tickets—processed through civil immigration courts, not criminal ones.

🔗 The 13th Amendment Exception—Slavery by Another Name?

Here’s where it gets real. The 13th Amendment abolished slavery—except as punishment for a crime.

The exact words: > “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude… shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted.”

So, what happens when someone crosses the border illegally and is criminally convicted? That exception clause kicks in. And under current law, low-cost or forced labor in detention centers becomes legal. That’s not just theory—it’s happening.

Migrants clean, cook, and maintain facilities for pennies per hour. Some call it “detention.” Others call it modern-day slavery.

Founder of HBCU Move-In Day Mafia Honored on Sherri Shepherd’s Daytime Talk Show for Transforming the Lives of Foster Youth Attending HBCUs

 TeeJ Mercer, the dynamic founder of Move-In Day Mafia, was recently spotlighted on the nationally syndicated Sherri talk show hosted by Sherri Shepherd. During the April 9th episode, Mercer was honored in the “She’s the Boss” segment for her groundbreaking work helping low-income and former foster youth transition into college life at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

A proud Howard University alum and 25-year Hollywood veteran, Mercer launched Move-In Day Mafia in 2022 to provide fully decked-out dorm rooms and ongoing monthly care packages to students who have aged out of foster care or face housing insecurity and extreme financial hardship. The nonprofit has since served 84 scholars across 21 HBCUs, with remarkable retention results—92% in 2024, compared to 0% in its pilot year.

Husband and Wife, Founders of #1 Black Doctor-Owned Vitamin Company, Tap Dr. Jay Barnett as Brand Spokesman to Advocate for a Healthier Black Community

Dr. Karleena Tuggle-McDaniel and her husband, Darian McDaniel, the founders of ProBLK Health Vitamins, who are committed to building a healthier Black community by offering high-quality, Black doctor–approved wellness products and donating up to 50% of net profits to health initiatives. To deepen and amplify this mission, ProBLK Health has partnered with Dr. Jay Barnett, a leading voice in Black mental health advocacy, as its official Brand Spokesman.

With Black Americans experiencing some of the worst health outcomes in the country—including higher rates of vitamin and mineral deficiencies, chronic illness, and untreated mental health conditions—this partnership is about action, awareness, and access.

Dr. Barnett, a former professional football player turned therapist and author, has dedicated his career to fostering holistic healing in the Black community. His national “Just Heal, Bro” tour has created safe spaces for Black men to prioritize mental health, and now, he’s bringing that same passion for healing to ProBLK Health Vitamins.

“Health is more than just working out or eating right—it’s about making sure our bodies have what they need to thrive,” said Dr. Barnett. “Too many of us are walking around with vitamin and mineral deficiencies that contribute to fatigue, depression, and disease. This partnership is about making sure our community has the knowledge, tools, and access to change that.”
