Hundreds of Black Doulas and Birth Workers to Convene at 3rd Annual Doula Conference

Nationwide -- The SMC Full Circle Doula Birth Companion Training, LLC (SMC Doulas) proudly presents the 3rd SMC Doula Conference, a groundbreaking event designed to uplift, educate, and empower birth workers across the nation. Taking place at the DoubleTree Hotel by Hilton in Portland, Oregon on September 5-7, 2025, this gathering will convene doulas, midwives, maternal health professionals, parents, and policymakers in a shared mission to transform birth outcomes and protect the legacy of Black and Indigenous birth traditions.

Why This Matters:

In a time when Black and Indigenous birthing people face the highest maternal mortality rates, the role of community-centered birth workers is more critical than ever. With 60% of pregnancy-related deaths deemed preventable (CDC), this conference serves as an essential platform for sharing knowledge, building sustainable practices, and reclaiming birth work as a sacred tradition.

Eric Adams Has Done an
Admirable Job Against The Odds

Op-ed by Rev.
Conrad Bennette Tillard

Eric Adams has done an admirable job, against the odds.  There was never anything to the case.

This case came about because he was enthusiastic in receiving migrants in New York City (he went to the busses to receive them) but he watched his city budget destroyed, with no help from the federal government. He then challenged the Biden administration to come up with a coherent border policy so that cities would not break their budgets, (which are designed to provide services for their residents) trying to handle what the federal government has the obligation of solving. For this he was told to be quiet and be a good Democrat.

Fighting for New Yorkers he took this hit. We all watched what was presented, there was no compelling evidence, no smoking guns! Now the case has been dropped.

Eric Adams is only the second Black mayor in the 400 year history of New York City. A working class brother who has climbed up from poverty in Brownsville and South Jamaica Queens, distinguished himself as a warrior against police brutality while he was on the police force, standing with many of us activists fighting Giuliani and the others and he had to go to work the next day at the NYPD.  I didn't, Rev. Sharpton didn't, Alton Maddox didn't, Rev Daughtry and Dr. Butts didn't, Mother Viola Plumber didn't but Eric did. He stood like a solid oak tree with the NYC activist community during the intense battles of the 80s, 90s and early 2000s.

US Rep. Ayanna Pressley’s Statement on Senate Passage of Republican Government Budget Bill

Pressley, House Dems Opposed Bill That Will Gut Healthcare, Housing & Food Assistance While Emboldening Musk-Trump Assault on Our Democracy

WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) issued the following statement after the Senate’s passage of Republicans’ shameful government spending bill, which will harm vulnerable families as Elon Musk and Donald Trump continue their unprecedented hostile government takeover.

Rep. Pressley voted against the legislation in the House and had implored her Senate colleagues to hold the line, reject the false choice, and instead support a clean, 30-day stopgap funding measure to allow for bipartisan negotiations on a longer-term funding bill.

“The Republicans’ budget bill that just passed the Senate is nothing short of devastating. Every Representative and Senator who voted to support it has let down the communities that elected them to be their voice in Congress. Rather than listen to the pleas from constituents in town halls across the country, Republicans chose to ignore them. When our communities begin to feel the harm of this reckless budget, there will be no one to blame but Republicans licking the boots of Donald Trump and Elon Musk and the handful of Democrats who chose not to fight. Tonight, I am thinking of the kids in pediatric cancer trials, the parents trying to stretch their dollars to cover groceries, the federal workers wronged by this cruel Trump White House, and all of the people across the country who are failed by this budget.”

“I voted NO on this bad-faith budget bill. I refuse to be complicit in Republicans’ attack on our most vulnerable, and I’m grateful to the overwhelming number of Democratic colleagues in both chambers who held the line and joined us in opposing this disgraceful legislation. I will always center the people, and I will continue standing in the gap and fighting this Administration like lives depend on it, because they do.”
