People Power Over Big Money:
Angie Nixon's Grassroots
Senate Campaign Surges
Official Protrait 2022

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - State Rep. Angie Nixon has turned her 2026 U.S. Senate bid into a national test of whether community-first organizing can move a state where Republicans hold a voter registration edge of more than one million. The Jacksonville native and former union organizer, first elected to the Florida House in 2016, now challenges incumbent Republican Sen. Ashley Moody in the November general election.

A Primary Upset Built on Micro-Donations

National strategists had largely written off Florida progressives, and many backed retired Lt. Col. Alex Vindman as the moderate favorite in the August Democratic primary. Vindman commanded a $16.2 million war chest. Nixon raised just under $1 million through small donations, a 16-to-1 spending gap, and she answered with a relentless ground game. She won more than 56 percent of the vote and sent shockwaves through the party infrastructure.

Black newspapers have credited her lifelong ties to local organizing. An editorial in The Florida Star described the win as the product of "decades of intentional, face-to-face trust building in communities that the establishment only visits every two to four years." The editorial added that Nixon "went directly to church pews, barbershops, and community centers, proving that organized people will always outlast organized money."

The General Election Challenge

The general election brings steep institutional and financial hurdles. Florida spans ten major media markets, which makes statewide advertising among the most expensive in the country. Moody, appointed by Gov. Ron DeSantis after Marco Rubio became Secretary of State, has sought to define Nixon by her ties to progressive organizations and by her platform of Medicare for All, universal childcare, and a national rent stabilization standard.

Friction inside the party has added pressure. After the primary, national Democratic leaders moved slowly to offer institutional backing. When Nixon asked Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer for donor introductions and media help, his initially noncommittal response sparked outrage among progressive organizers. A public push from advocates shifted the calculus, and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee then facilitated fundraising support.

Economic Populism With Momentum

Nixon has doubled down on economic populism. Sen. Bernie Sanders joined her this past week for a series of packed rallies across the state, including an outdoor gathering in Tampa. Her field operation concentrates on turnout in marginalized communities that have faced stricter vote-by-mail rules and shifting district boundaries.

That message lands in Black communities hit hardest by Florida's housing and property insurance crisis. A reporter for the Capital Outlook wrote that for working-class Black Floridians, skyrocketing rents and the rising cost of groceries "are daily crises." The reporter noted that Nixon's background as a single mother who watched her own mother work two jobs "gives her an authentic voice that resonates where slick, multi-million-dollar TV ads fail."

The Record Behind the Campaign

Nixon built her reputation in the House by pressing on issues that shape daily life for working families. She has challenged Florida's limits on how educators teach Black history, opposed rollbacks to voting access, and joined fellow Black lawmakers in a 2023 Capitol protest that drew national coverage. Voters in her district saw a representative who carries the fight to the floor, and she now carries that reputation statewide.

A Coalition Rooted in Florida's Voting Rights Tradition

The campaign courts Black and Afro-Caribbean communities, Latino families in Central Florida, retirees who depend on Social Security and Medicare, labor unions, and young voters facing high rents and student debt. HBCU alumni networks tied to Bethune-Cookman University and Florida A&M University offer another proven channel for mobilizing voters. Nixon draws on a deep civic memory that stretches from Harry T. Moore's voting rights work in the 1940s to the 2018 campaign that restored voting rights to people with past felony convictions.

Volunteer teams concentrate on three efforts: voter registration drives, rides to early voting sites, and conversations with residents who skipped recent elections. Local captains now organize in counties Democrats have often overlooked.

What Comes Next

Recent polling shows the gap narrowing, with Moody holding a 49% to 45% lead. Nixon's path to victory runs through historic turnout from the coalition she has built from the ground up: labor unions, civil rights advocates, and young voters. Her campaign needs sustained small-dollar fundraising, expanded field offices, and strong earned media from Pensacola to Key West.

Win or lose, Nixon's candidacy places Black women's leadership, economic dignity, and healthcare access at the center of Florida's statewide conversation. Her campaign offers progressives a blueprint for competing in tough territory, and Black newspapers across the state continue to document that story with the context larger outlets often compress.
