Meet the Financial Literacy Coach Helping Black and Brown Families Transform Their Money Mindset

Dr. Wendy G. Wilson, a Texas-based educator, businesswoman, and licensed financial professional, is working to help families start financial conversations earlier. As a Money Mindset & Accountability Coach and the founder of Free Me Financial Solutions, she is focused on equipping Black and Brown families with the tools and understanding needed to break generational money cycles.

For generations, many Black and Brown families have been taught the value of hard work. Work hard. Stay consistent. Provide for your family. But one critical piece has often been missing from that equation: understanding how money actually works. Bills get paid. Responsibilities are handled.

Get ready for a transformational journey toward inner peace as indie author Max W. Miller’s new self-help release, Blame It On The Feel Of Pain, inspires readers in a witty, down-to-earth book. Truth and compassion are foretold, using poetic frames called ‘The Wises,’ and the help of opinionated little emojis bringing laughter and thought-provoking conclusions throughout.

The author encourages her readers, whom she also calls partners, to stop wrestling with the hard knocks of the past. She expresses how voluntarily walking back into time precedes trauma healing. Confronting lingering pains is a step toward strength and hope for the future. ‘Blame It’ delves into the author’s life experiences, bringing to life the importance of using Full Circle Moments to find resolutions.

Throughout Blame It On The Feel Of Pain, the reader grows to understand through a unique interpretation that what we are destined to become grows out of the years we’ve already traveled. Further, our future hinges on how we address the pains of the past. Other expressions focus on how desires in the present are carved out of having a clear vision that old, lingering strongholds must be defeated. A history of suffering is a prerequisite for becoming fed up enough to demand enjoyment now!

Yet the principles behind money-how to manage it, grow it, and make it work for you-are rarely explained.

As a result, many adults find themselves doing everything they were taught, yet still feeling uncertain when it comes to financial decisions.

“In many households, we were taught how to work-but not always how money works,” says Dr. Wilson. “And when you don’t understand money, you can work hard your entire life and still feel like you’re not getting ahead.”

She explains that children are constantly learning about money-whether those lessons are intentional or not.

“They’re watching how adults handle stress, bills, spending, and financial decisions,” she says. “Those experiences shape their beliefs about money long before they ever earn their first dollar.”

According to Dr. Wilson, many financial challenges are not the result of poor discipline-but a lack of financial education.

“Hard work alone doesn’t automatically lead to financial clarity,” she explains. “Without knowledge, people often repeat the same patterns they grew up seeing.”

That’s why she believes financial education should begin long before adulthood.

“If we wait until someone is thirty or forty to learn how money works, they’ve already made years of decisions without the right foundation,” Dr. Wilson says. “But when children and teenagers are exposed early, they develop confidence instead of fear around money.”

Wilson also emphasizes that financial success is deeply connected to mindset.

“Most people don’t just have money challenges-they have inherited belief patterns,” she says. “If money was associated with stress, silence, or struggle growing up, those beliefs often follow them into adulthood.”

Through her coaching, she helps individuals identify and shift those beliefs so they can make more informed and confident financial decisions.

“When you understand why you think the way you do about money, you gain the power to change how you handle it.”

Dr. Wilson recently shared these insights during her appearance on the Catch the Vision Podcast, where she discussed generational money patterns, financial mindset, and the importance of early education within families.

During the conversation, she made one point clear: “You can’t pass down knowledge you were never taught. But once you learn it, you can change what the next generation inherits.”

The webinar

To continue this mission, Dr. Wilson is hosting a free live webinar designed to help individuals understand the key financial foundations needed before they begin investing.

The webinar, titled “The 5 Foundations You Need in Place Before You Start Investing,” will walk attendees through the essential princi es required to build financial confidence and make informed decisions with their money.

“Before people focus on investing, they need to understand the foundation,” Wilson explains. “Without that, they’re building on uncertainty instead of strategy.”

Through her work, Dr. Wilson remains committed to helping Black and Brown families replace silence around money with education, conversation, and intentional learning.

“Breaking generational financial cycles doesn’t begin with wealth,” she says. “It begins with what we teach.”

Dr. Wendy G. Wilson provides money mindset coaching and accountability support for individuals and families seeking to improve their relationship with money, build financial confidence, and create lasting financial change.
