BLACK STUDENT FROM TEXAS ACCEPTED TO OVER 40 COLLEGES SAYS HE IS GRATEFUL FOR COMMUNITY

 Jeremiah Bledsoe, an African American high school teen from Fort Worth, Texas, has been accepted to over 40 colleges and universities and he credits his success to serving others. He also believes that his loving community has made a difference in his life.

The Nolan Catholic High School senior has received several awards, and grants for his service over the years including Hershey Heartwarming Hero, the Power of Youth Award, and Youth Service of America. Jeremiah is grateful for using his time to help people in his community. For the past 10 years, he has been visiting nursing homes and donating items to the elderly.

BLACK CULTURE MEETS ASIAN CULTURE IN NEW BOOK BY CAMEROONIAN WIFE, MOM OF 3

What does Black Asian solidarity mean? Africa Yoon, the Cameroonian American author of a memoir entitled The Korean, says it looks like telling stories of when we get along too. Including a story of an A-list Korean American actor showing her memoir support.

It was two days before her book launch and she got a major supporter “I had been working pretty hard and stopped to rest, then mid-day Saturday; I got a notification that Actor and Ambassador Daniel Dae Kim, a member of the White House AAPI Advisory Committee and fellow Hawaiian, mentioned me in a viral post on Instagram. “What he did sent a ripple that helped my book launch in a strong way and it is far more important than he and I. Seeing an Asian icon supporting a Black woman in her efforts to succeed is course-changing. When we ask for our lives to matter you see it’s actually in those moments.”

ATLANTA JOURNALIST AND DAUGHTER CREATE TV TALK SHOW TO 'ELEVATE' MENTAL HEALTH

 What do you do when you are in the middle of a pandemic, and your 20-year-old daughter asks you to host a talk show with her? "You do it," said Deanna Johnson Cauthen, producer and co-host of a new television show and YouTube channel called The Elevate Talk Show.

When the pandemic hit in March 2020, Deanna, her daughter and co-host Adrianna, and Deanna's husband, Andrew, all suddenly found themselves working from home. “Initially, we thought that the pandemic would be short-lived and that our lives would quickly return to normal, but that was not the case,” said Deanna.

ZifasBoutique is an African-inspired fashion accessory, and home décor brand based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and inspired by afro aesthetics from West Africa. The inspiration for the brand can be traced back to the founder’s upbringing in Togo West Africa, where she would help her mother and aunt sell fabrics during school breaks. HAIR LOSS, SPIRITUAL GAIN: NEW FILM CAPTURES BLACK WOMAN’S ALOPECIA STRUGGLE AND JOURNEY OF SELF-LOVE

Mere hours after violence erupted on stage at the 2022 Oscars ceremony – veteran actor Will Smith slapping comedian Chris Rock over a joke Rock had made about Smith’s wife rocking a shaved head – Candace Christina found herself flooded with emotions. And it had nothing to do with two rich celebrities butting heads in front of the world. The verbal jab in question was close to her. It was personal.

You see, barely a couple of hours before, Christina had boldly, unapologetically, and with royal fanfare unveiled her own bald head for the first time ever to her dearest friends and closest family members at an exclusive, invitation-only affair that she’d planned in her hometown of Atlanta. Like Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, Christina had recently learned that she too suffers from alopecia, an autoimmune disorder that causes hair loss, with it often falling out in large clumps. Only in Christina’s case, a dermatologist suggested that hers was brought on by about with Covid-19 that landed her in the hospital in the summer of 2021.

ODU STUDY FINDS THAT TEACHERS MAY NOT BE EQUIPPED TO HELP STUDENTS IDENTIFY RACISM IN SCIENCE

A new study conducted by researchers at Old Dominion University has found that prospective teachers may not be well equipped to help students identify racism in science practice.

According to Jomo Mutegi, the study’s lead author, “These findings should be especially concerning for children of African descent whose communities suffer disproportionately from environmental toxins, food desserts, medical malpractice and other manifestations of racism in science practice.”

The study, which will soon be published by the Journal of Science Teacher Education, collected data from 64 preservice teachers surveyed over the course of 18 months. Among the findings, it showed that respondents viewed Western culture and science as being superior to non-Western culture and science and also viewed scientific advancement as one-sided, acknowledging its benefits but not recognizing actual or potential detriments. “If students go through life with naïve views of science, they are more likely to be harmed by the detriments that sometimes accompany scientific advancement,” said Demetrice Smith-Mutegi, the study’s second author.

Long Island African-American Chamber Launches Free Counseling to Help LI, NYC Companies Qualify for Funding

Many small businesses owned by African-Americans and companies in general face difficulties getting  loans, despite strong sales. They may face paperwork problems, insufficient accounts, lack of data, liens, unpaid debts or have owners with credit trouble. As a result, a good company may do badly when it comes to getting financing even from a willing lender. Now there’s a new source of help in overcoming these obstacles for minority-owned and other businesses seeking funding.

The Long Island African-American Chamber of Commerce (LIAACC) has used a portion of a grant to help small business owners to hire TMI & Partners, led by Alvin Hartley, to provide free counseling and assistance to African-American owned and other businesses in Nassau, Suffolk, Queens and Brooklyn to obtain funding. 

The idea is to give them the help they need to resolve issues and bridge the funding gap that too often stands between small businesses and the funds they need to launch, survive and grow.

BLACK DOCTOR-OWNED VITAMIN & WELLNESS COMPANY, 50% OF PROFITS GO TO ERADICATING HEALTH DISPARITIES IN BLACK COMMUNITIES

 Co-Founders Darian McDaniel and Dr. Karleena Tuggle-McDaniel started Problk Health Vitamins for two main reasons - first, to act as a vehicle spotlighting health awareness by encouraging and increasing health consciousness in the Black community where it is often not prioritized. And secondly, to work toward eradicating health disparities in Black communities by donating 50% of net profits to support existing non-profits whose goals are to improve health and wellness in majority Black communities.

Dr. Karleena has been a physician for over 16 years in predominantly minority communities, and a weight loss surgeon for the past 11 years. Constantly seeing patients who have health issues that are often preventable or controllable with improved lifestyle modifications, She wanted to do something that most people had access to, could afford, and would be able to do on an almost daily basis that positively contributed to their overall health.

Co-Founder Darian, with 20 years of marketing experience, suggested vitamin supplements since at least 92% of Black people have some level of vitamin deficiency and medical research has shown that these deficiencies can contribute to health issues. He comments, "We combined that idea with a pitch on Shark Tank where a company donates a portion of profits to benefit marine life. We thought, if they could do that for fish, we could definitely do something similar for Black people. Voila... Problk Health Vitamins was born."
