Haiti, I Think of You

Historically speaking, every time I think of Haiti's indigenous Taino (Caribbean) people of South America, the name Christopher Columbus (December 5, 1492) comes to mind. Upon arriving in this most populous country in the Caribbean, Columbus thought that he was in India or China.  Today's estimates of Haiti’s population are 11.4 million people, according to various encyclopedia sources.

Overtime, Spain (early 17th century) made Haiti an integral part of the Spanish Empire (La Española). In 1697, the French portion of West Haiti (Saint-Domingue), France 'profitably colonized' sugarcane plantations by using thousands of slaves who were captured in Africa.

Thus, creating one of the riches colonies in the whole-wide world.  However, during the French Revolution (1789-1799), the first Black general of the French Army, Toussaint Louverture led free Haitians and slaves successfully (1789-1804), while defeating Napoleon Bonaparte's army. Then in 1804, Jean-Jacques Dessalines (General-Emperor) solemnly proclaimed Haiti as a sovereign nation of South America and the Caribbean; the first country in the Americas to abolish slavery.

BLACK FOUNDER, WHO HAS SECURED $17M IN FUNDS, OFFERS FREE GRANT WRITING TRAINING TO ORGANIZATIONS IN NEED

Linda Peavy, the owner of LiPav Consulting, LLC, is offering virtual free grant writing training for organizations needing to increase their fund development. She launched her company in 2008 as an avenue for providing marketing communications to non-profits and faith-based organizations.

In 2009, she was asked to lead a non-profit and quickly realized that grant writing would be a necessity to keep the organization afloat. From this opportunity, her focus on providing funding services to other non-profit organizations began.

LiPav Consulting, LLC has written grants and business development funding totaling over $17 million. Her area of specialty includes educational institutions, charter schools, and faith-based organizations, even though she has helped secure funds for youth-based organizations, ex-offender programs, workforce development, veteran organizations, and more.

Knowing that many non-profits, especially small entities, rely upon grants to survive, Linda wanted to extend her expertise to as many organizations as possible and give back to the community. She created the LiPav Writing Academy to provide resources for those who cannot hire a professional writer.

BREAKTHROUGH ALZHEIMER’S CLINICAL TRIAL SEEKS TO INCLUDE MORE BLACK AND DIVERSE VOLUNTEERS

Research sites in Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Texas, and New York are now recruiting participants for The Global Alzheimer’s Platform Foundation® (GAP)’s Bio-Hermes Study – a breakthrough Alzheimer’s clinical trial searching for cost-effective methods to assess the signs of the disease. It is the first-ever Alzheimer’s study to prioritize diversity in its recruitment goals.

Black Americans 65 years and older are three times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease than white people. This disparity is likely even greater considering that African Americans are less likely to be diagnosed with the condition and are often misdiagnosed. When they do receive an Alzheimer’s diagnosis, it’s often later in life when treatment options are more limited.

For Black physicians across the country, this worsening public health crisis is particularly concerning. The increased prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease in the Black community – two-to-three times the prevalence in white communities – is made worse by the reality that Alzheimer’s risk coincides with other conditions that disproportionately affect Black Americans (such as Diabetes, Heart Disease, and Obesity).

Today, as previously stated and written, precious memories and condolences of Sarah McLean are written about in Legacy's Obituaries, Charleston, South Carolina:

Sarah Louise Singleton McLean, Communications Editor of The Family Journal, USA & Overseas, will forever be remembered for her historical newsletters, family reunions, obituary collection, and literary archive, since the 1950s.

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing (Ecclesiastes 3:1-22).

Words of comfort: Although we cannot personally be with the family to offer our condolences and support; please know that we have been holding you in our prayers since hearing of Cousin Sarah's death. Cousin Sarah was like an aunt, and second mother to me when I was growing up on the 'Red Road.'

She always made sure that we, the kids, had a ride to Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She sometimes would let Cousin Linda and I hang out at her house on weekends when we were teens.

In fact, she often hosted get-togethers for the youth from Canaan United Methodist Church (CUMC), Ridgeville, South Carolina, so we would have a safe and fun place to have a cookout or fellowship. Even after she became a mother herself, she continued to be a mother figure to so many of us.

Cousin Sarah was truly cherished and made a difference in so many lives. We shall all continue to cherish her memory. Our hearts go out to the entire family, especially Cousin Karen. Love and Prayers, Rev. Drs. Andrea, and Curtis King a.k.a. Cousins Ann and Curtis.

CHEF TURNED ENTREPRENEUR LAUNCHES LINE OF SOUL FOOD STARTER KITS IN 1,000+ GROCERY STORES NATIONWIDE

Meet culinary expert and business leader Claude Booker, the CEO and founder of Booker’s Soul Food Starters which are now available in over 1,000 grocery stores across the country. His business providing Southern side dishes for buffets was decimated as a direct result of the pandemic, and most buffets remain closed.

He pivoted his business during the pandemic and went from ideation to grocery store shelves with Booker’s Soul Food Starters in nine months. He did not shy away from his commitments to building a supply chain filled with domestic Black-owned businesses. The partnership with other Black businesses encourages more opportunities for those businesses and allows them to employ other Black Americans.

“When the pandemic hit in 2020, I lost 90% of my hot food and steam table business during the shutdown,” said Claude. “We pivoted and created pantry-ready seasonings for soul food during the pandemic because more people were eating at home. We went from creation to 1,000 stores in the midst of a pandemic.”

BLACK WOMAN ENTREPRENEUR LAUNCHES SHOE COMPANY THAT CATERS TO SORORITIES AND FRATERNITIES IN THE DIVINE 9

Meet Kam Ballard, founder of b.c.e Shoes, an online company that customizes shoes for the sororities and fraternities in the Divine 9. She says that she started the company to offset college costs for her children. She comments, “I started this company as a way to pay for my children’s college education. I wanted to break the cycle of graduating from college with a mountain of student loan debt. It has evolved into something bigger than I ever could have imagined.”

The Games WE Play and Live

The Olympic Games, a raging prophetic pandemic, and epic climatic disasters all conspire to make the planet almost hostile and in some cases inhospitable. As the world turns, burns, floods, ravages, and hemorrhage the Olympic games open to empty seats, muted fanfare, and individual drama as a cloud of uncertainty, anger, and misplace priorities underscore Olympic size expectation.

These games have as a purpose to unite the world in friendly, however nationalistic, competition for gold, silver, and bronze distinction but COVID-19 and it’s mutation (Delta Variant) permutated the dynamic of such competition. The original antagonism between worldly Olympian is no longer just to win a gold, silver, or bronze medal but to survive COVID-19 and its anomaly - to be the last man/woman standing - literally.

There is much to be said, vociferously, about living in the moment but nothing exemplifies the moment more than the mental challenge of being the fittest on the planet (olympians) on the one hand and the sickest on the planet (pandemic) on the other. Whole body integrity has at its root the component of mental health.

The line of demarcation between Olympic athlete and a COVID-19/variant host is delicately thin. So tenuous that in the wink of an eye a gold medalist can become a COVID ominous statistic. From an Olympian dream to a COVID nightmare with no exemption except vaccination which offers no guarantee.

The data on whose winning and losing is an unfair interpretation of the games we play and the life we live. Be advised you can choose to opt in or opt out of being an Olympian, of vaccinations, or playing to win or not to lose.

Three superstar athletes -- tennis player Naomi Osaka, gymnast Simone Biles and track and field sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson -- have opted out of Olympic Games for various reasons mostly due to mental health issues.

All seize the moment to win by not participating . Why? Mental health matters too. We play games to win but, in this moment during a pandemic we are living life not to lose - big difference.

Roland S. Martin Launches Innovative Online TV Channel Black Star Network

Marking three years as the definitive daily digital source for news and information from an unapologetically Black perspective with his groundbreaking daily digital show #RolandMartinUnfiltered, award-winning journalist Roland S. Martin has announced that he is launching the Black Star Network, an OTT network aimed at African American consumers. BSN will debut with original content on Sept. 3, 2021, the third-year anniversary of #RolandMartinUnfiltered.

A hybrid OTT media network, BSN is subscription free, and ad-supported. The network will stream content focused on political, business and cultural insights and perspectives of Black thought leaders, influencers and opinion makers. The flagship show, #RolandMartinUnfiltered, has a social media following of more than 3.5 million, including nearly 800,000 Youtube subscribers. The daily show has generated nearly 509 million views and more than 1.5 billion minutes watched since its inception.

#RolandMartinUnfiltered's exponential growth is a direct reflection of Martin’s efforts to serve its audience with content and information focused on the unique concerns of Black Americans.

“African Americans are voracious news and information consumers, and they are demanding more content from their perspective that address issues that they care about,” said Martin, a digital pioneer who launched the first Black news source audio and video podcasts more than a decade ago.

FOUNDER OF BLACK-OWNED SNEAKER COMPANY TARIK EDMONSON SEEKS TO EMPOWER ATHLETES WITH NEW NCAA RULING

Under a recent Supreme Court ruling, the National Collegiate Athletic Association can no longer place restrictions on education-related benefits for student-athletes. NCAA athletes can now profit from their name, image, and likeness with unlimited incentives.

Before the decision, student-athletes were not allowed financial gains from the billions of dollars in revenue that sports brought to American colleges and universities. Student-athletes can now reap financial benefits from their talents early on. But with the new judgment in place, however, many people like Tarik Edmonson, founder of Nagast Footwear, fear that student-athletes may be taken advantage of by large corporations and he aims to educate them on the possible pitfalls.

“Everybody knows that these large shoe companies treat athletes like modern-day slaves,” says Edmonson. “They make billions of dollars off the athletes and only give the athletes a fraction of the profits.

He continues, “You got athletes who make companies $10 billion a year but the athlete only gets a billion. They are rich, but why leave $9 billion on the table? You did the work and the sweat, and God gave you that talent. So it should be the other way around.”
