Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested earlier by ICE Friday May 9th 2025
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested earlier today during a protest at the Delaney Hall ICE detention facility in Newark, New Jersey. He was charged with trespassing on federal property but has since been released from federal custody. New York Post
The arrest occurred during a protest involving Mayor Baraka and several Democratic members of Congress, including Reps. Bonnie Watson Coleman, LaMonica McIver, and Rob Menendez. They were attempting to inspect the facility, which Baraka and others argue lacks proper permits and was opened without community input. The Guardian
After his release, Mayor Baraka criticized the actions of ICE and the Department of Homeland Security, describing the arrest as a politically motivated attempt to intimidate public officials. He emphasized that his actions were morally guided and expressed concerns over the federal government's immigration enforcement practices. Politico
Mayor Baraka is scheduled to appear in court on May 15.
