Federal Agents Search Rep. Ilhan Omar's Home as Investigation Widens
Federal agents from Homeland Security Investigations searched Rep. Ilhan Omar's Washington, D.C.-area home on October 12, 2026, with a search warrant a judge authorized. Omar remains free and uncharged, and she continues to serve in Congress while the Department of Justice and HSI pursue an ongoing criminal investigation.
Agents carried out her cell phone, personal computer, passport, notebooks, and boxes of evidence. Investigators have also issued more than a dozen grand jury subpoenas, including subpoenas to relatives such as her sister, Sahra Noor.
What investigators are examining
The probe centers on whether Omar or her late father made false statements about her age and her immigration and asylum history when she arrived from Somalia in the 1990s. Investigators have also revisited long-standing allegations about a past marriage, which earlier reviews rejected. Reports indicate they are examining her personal and spousal financial disclosure forms as well.

A progressive record that put her in the spotlight
Omar, a Black woman who arrived in the United States as a child refugee, won her Minnesota seat in 2018 and became the first Somali American in Congress. She and Rep. Rashida Tlaib became the first two Muslim women to serve in the House. Black media outlets such as The Root, TheGrio, and NewsOne have followed her career closely as a Black immigrant lawmaker who speaks plainly.
Omar built her voting record on core progressive priorities. She backs Medicare for All, the Green New Deal, student debt cancellation, a higher minimum wage, and expanded public housing. She belongs to the Congressional Progressive Caucus and stands among the most visible members of "the Squad."
Her district includes Minneapolis, where George Floyd died in 2020. Omar became a leading congressional voice for police accountability and reform, and she joined colleagues in pressing for federal policing legislation. She also champions immigrant protections, and she has criticized travel bans and aggressive immigration enforcement for years.
Omar has taken on President Trump directly since her first term. Trump targeted her in 2019, and crowds at his rally chanted "send her back." In 2023, House Republicans removed her from the Foreign Affairs Committee, a move Black commentators and many Democrats called a political punishment. Her supporters point to this history when they describe the current investigation as the latest chapter in a long confrontation.
Omar and her legal team respond
Omar's attorneys sent a letter calling the investigation "vindictive, retributive, and politically motivated." They argue it violates constitutional protections and the separation of powers.
Omar has publicly condemned the search as an effort by the Trump administration to weaponize federal law enforcement and intimidate political opponents ahead of the midterm elections. Her supporters in the Black and immigrant communities see the case as part of a pattern in which outspoken Black and Muslim lawmakers face heightened scrutiny.
What comes next
Prosecutors can still file charges, decline to file them, or continue gathering evidence through the grand jury. The subpoenas to family members signal that the investigation continues to expand.
