From Nostalgia to Pride: “A Black Thang” Captures the Multifaceted Black Experience Through Stunning Illustrations

Illustrator Donald Powell, a passionate artist from Sacramento, California, presents A Black Thang: The Good, Bad, Ugly, Pride, and Flava of the Black Experience, a visual body of creative work about the Black experience that transcends the boundaries of traditional art unlike ever before.

Born in 1961, Don’s artistic journey began in kindergarten where scribbles of comic book characters would initiate a journey of evolution to the detailed, intricate, and realistic illustrations of “A Black Thang.

The turning point of this journey occurred at age 13 while attending an all-white school in Long Beach, California, where he would witness first-hand racial and cultural divides. This enlightening experience of the contrasts and infectious distinctiveness between his race and others sparked intrigue and a transformation in himself and his art. Simple scribbles would grow with him into illustrations documenting what he saw of his Soul Brothers and Sisters.

Youth Leadership Trainer Introduces African Leaders to Inspire the Next Generation

Lucie S. Matsouaka, an internationally recognized youth leadership trainer, author, and human rights consultant, is proud to announce the launch of her latest book, The Phenomenal Leader In Me: Africa Edition. Aimed at young people of African descent, the book combines powerful leadership principles with inspiring stories of African leaders and a rich introduction to the continent of Africa.

“I travel often across the United States, Europe, and Africa, meeting young people who are eager to learn about Africa,” said Lucie. “Sadly, schools often don’t provide much insight into the continent’s history or its global contributions. That’s why this book includes a map of Africa on the cover and a detailed map at the end, showcasing all 54 countries.”

Stop Jumping on the Bandwagon

By: Dr. Tara S. Merchant
Dr. Tara S. Merchant

In today’s fast-paced digital world, trends come and go at the speed of a swipe.
Social media floods our timelines with viral movements, overnight experts, and the latest “must-follow” ideologies.

But in this whirlwind of opinions and bandwagon activism, I challenge you to pause and ask yourself: Are you truly invested in what you support, or are you just going along for the ride?

Bandwagon culture isn’t new. It has existed in politics, business, and entertainment for decades. However, the rise of social media has amplified its reach, making it easy for people to adopt causes, cancel individuals, or champion movements without fully understanding their origins, impact, or consequences.

It’s effortless to repost a hashtag, criticize from the sidelines, or align with the loudest voices without doing any real work. But does that create meaningful change? Or are we just riding waves without substance?
